Conference opener on the road and Haliburton plays 39 minutes as a true freshmen. The level of trust and confidence the coaches have in him is off the charts.

I really like the depth we are developing in the front-court. Having 3 bigs that are all capable of providing good minutes will be huge for us this year and a major upgrade over our depth in that area in a long time.

Really big win. If you want to finish in the top half of the league, you need to beat the bottom half of the league on the road, that's what we did last night.

Great road win. Long layoff and several guys not playing up to their standard play and we found a way to win. I'll take that all day.

As frustrating as it was to watch Shayok keep shooting and missing I can't think of a single shot I'd consider a bad shot. Just an off day. Keep shooting open shots. Same for Wiggy and THT.

I think Jacobson gives us a ton of value even when he isn't scoring. For what Lard gives us in rim protection he loses in defending ball screens. Jacobson being able to switch or hard hedge those helps us immensely in guarding the 3.

Wiggy's going to have to get his feet back under him defensively. I figured him not being able to guard that tiny guy from Eastern Illinois was a one off, but he was getting blown by again last night.

Take aways of the game:
1. Lindell needs to be on the floor. Period.
2. Lard needs to max out for this team to play their best.
3. Jacobsen looked good in the non-conf but I think he’ll be exposed as a solid #2 off the bench in B12 play.
4. Haliburton is clutch. Reminds me of Naz with those threes. We need to see more of those from him.
5. Shayok seemed like he was having an off night. Needs to slow down with the threes, but can’t really blame him for taking open shots.
6. THT had a rough night, but he still should start over NWB.

2. Agree. Lard can't carry the team, but when he is playing well, this team is elite and can play with anyone.
3. Agree. Dominant against lesser teams, but against bigger, quicker guys just isn't going to be a difference maker. Lard and Solo will eat up his minutes, but he will still play when those two get in foul trouble (which they will). This is cruel, but he is the kind of player Iowa would steal from UNI.
4. Halliburton is my absolute favorite player on this team. He's a combination of Georges and Naz, in personality and game. And that odd stroke reminds me of Willoughby.
6 - IDK if I'd start THT over NWB at this point. Think you have to rotate those two and Wigg across 2 spots, give each about 25-35 mins a night depending on situation/rotation and hot hand. What a terrible problem to have...

It was nice to get the no road wins thing off of the team's back. Overall I think they played fairly well, but Shayak was taking a lot of questionable shots, and not making many. Also, they had a string of 4-5 TOs in a row after they got up by 7 or 8 with 3 or so minutes left. Could have made it a lot easier game.

Other than the 4 fouls in 16 minutes I thought Lard played well last night. Didn't look like he was trying to force anything offensively and played within the offensive flow. Hopefully he can get things figured out defensively because when he's not out of position or making a dumb foul it's nice to have the rim protector when the other team drives to the hoop. Right now though he's maxing out at around 15 minutes with his foul issues and ideally would be nice to get that cleaned up and be able to used him 20-25 minutes off the bench.

I'm guessing that Wigginton is back in the starting lineup Saturday and it will be interesting to see which player goes to the bench because NWB, Hali, and THT all have played well enough so far to start but I think regardless which one goes to the bench that guy is going to give us everything when he's in the game. Guessing it's probably Hali but I think he's shown us that he has the personality to play whatever role Coach Prohm asks of him and he probably will wind up playing more minutes than THT and NWB in a lot of games when his shot was falling like it was last night. There are going to be nights when THT has the hot hand or we need Solo in for 20 minutes because we're getting beat up in the paint and all this depth we have now and the chemistry this team has shown it's going to be fun watching different lineups go on runs when the matchups dictate we play a certain way.

I know we love our "depth," but things are starting to thin out. I see seven Big 12 players above from tonight, and eight once Solomon is really healthy again.

We can go 10 deep easily if we have to. Talley and Lewis are both capable of providing 10-15 minutes a game against Big 12 competition if they have to. I think you are forgetting how much both of them played last year.

His ankle/foot is probably still a bit sore on lateral movement. He will take a few weeks to get good IMO.

Haliburton is our best all around player. Hard to take him off the court with his energy, defense, and ball skills. Great player, only going to get better.

Three huge contributors in the non con(shayok, tht, jacobsen) had bad games........and we still won. It doesn't matter who it was against or where.....that is a good sign.

I know it's been written about by others already, but I love our depth this season. In fact, I'm not sure I can remember an ISU team being so deep as we are.

I've never agreed with "depth is overrated "; you can win without it, but it's a lot easier to win with it and it's certainly a nice team feature to have.

Most of the 3s we took tonight were open though. Those are good shots. Sure you can try to move the ball around more, but the chances are you probably wont get a better shot. Hoiberg's teams thrived on this philosophy. If you have a good shot, take it. You run offense with the hopes of creating a good shot, if you get one in transition, you need to shoot it. The game is not as simple as "just drive to the rim for layups or fouls every time". I think teams are starting to pack it inside against us knowing we aren't a great shooting team. Hopefully Wigginton starts to make some.

I agree with you though that a couple fast breaks we could have gone to the basket instead of shooting a 3 (the Wigginton 3 in transition comes to mind).

Yeah the shots weren't bad....I thought they were a little quick and forced though.

A few possessions they needed to regroup on offense and hurried things.

Shayok and Jacobsen better get used to scoring less than the 20 and 15 they put up in nonconference. We are better off if Shayok isn't shooting 11 threes every game. Let Babb shoot a few more of them. Babb is our best 3 point shooter this season.

The thing is most of those 11 attempts were good shots that he should be taking.

I didn't get to watch - what happened at the end of the first half? Seen quite a few comments on it. Sounds like OSU went on a run but couldn't tell if it was due to them playing well or us playing poorly.

Way up there
I got trashed for saying this a month ago but I'm even more convinced after we have everyone back. This team will be at its best with Lard or Young on the floor. MJ is great but the only advantage he gives you over those two scoring. With so many other capable scorers, its worth sacrificing MJ's offense for what those to bring physically and defensively. The other advantage with this is that you'll have two offensive weapons to come off the bench in MJ and whichever guard ends up sitting. We will need all 3 bigs, it'll be fun to see how Prohm uses them all situationally.

Basketball happened. We were up 8. We missed 4 shots in a row, they hit 3 of 4 from Three.

We could've covered the 3-point line better last night, but it wasn't anything monumentally catastrophic by any means like some seemed to believe.
