Yes, all of the above. How many blown saves were there the first couple months of the season? Miller and Condon had David Kaplan, seemed like 13 more wins and they all felt the Cubs would be in but that is a lot to do.

It's a product of playing like garbage for half the season and doing nothing coming into the season to address the bullpen C and 3B issues. The bullpen has been basically rebuilt from the group that started the season with a combination of minor league call ups, waiver pickups, and a trade. 3B is still an issue and have got better play out of the C spot lately although that is still an area of need going forward. PCA finally adjusting to MLB pitching really sparked things too, his charisma is likely rubbing off on the team and having an effect on their play too I think.

This was the opening day roster:

Pitchers (13+2 IL)
11 - Drew Smyly, LHP
18 - Shota Imanaga, LHP
25 - Yency Almonte, RHP
28 - Kyle Hendricks, RHP
35 - Justin Steele, LHP
36 - Jordan Wicks, LHP
38 - Mark Leiter, Jr., RHP
43 - Luke Little, LHP
45 - Caleb Kilian, RHP (60-day IL)
50 - Jameson Taillon, RHP (15-day IL)
51 - Héctor Neris, RHP
66 - Julian Merryweather, RHP
72 - Javier Assad, RHP
73 - Adbert Alzolay, RHP
74 - José Cuas, RHP
Catchers (2)
9 - Miguel Amaya
15 - Yan Gomes
Infielders (7+1 IL)
1 - Nick Madrigal
2 - Nico Hoerner
5 - Christopher Morel
7 - Dansby Swanson
16 - Patrick Wisdom (10-day IL)
20 - Miles Mastrobuoni (L)
29 - Michael Busch (L)
41 - Garrett Cooper
Outfielders (4)
8 - Ian Happ (S)
24 - Cody Bellinger (L)
27 - Seiya Suzuki
40 - Mike Tauchman (L)

7 of the relievers are either gone or on the IL right now, Cooper Gomes and Morel are gone and Madrigal once again has been hurt most of the year and in Iowa. Amazing we've stayed afloat with the pitching lately too with all the injuries and Hendricks basically washed up at this point.
This x 100.

Like 2023, it took us until July to find our best bullpen.

Like 2023, we had our palms up when asking what we can expect from our corner infield

Jed might get throat punched if he says “games in April and May matter” - if you believe that, then put a ******* roster together that shows that.

You’re the Chicago ******* Cubs. You have a question mark at a position? BUY SOMEBODY.

Stop with the crazy ideas.

Mets were getting no-hit going into 9th inning and now they have scored 2 runs to take the lead.

Race to the bat rack for the Dodgers right now. Wicks gives up 4 Home Runs in the 1st.

I think Wicks has shown, between last September and since his return, along with never making it longer than 4 innings, he is not a trustworthy starter long term.

Can’t wait for him to be SP4 next year

Part of the problem is him just being able to stay healthy too. He's made just 16 career starts in the big leagues so far and not sure what the longest stretch of those have been between IL stints. I've never viewed him anything more than a 4th or 5th guy in the rotation at best. I think Brown, Wesneski, and even Kilian have a higher upside than he does as back end of the rotation guys.

Speaking of Kilian not sure why he is still in Iowa and hasn't been given a chance to take some starts late this season. He had a really good August for the I-Cubs in 5 starts with a 1.88 ERA and 21 K's in 24 innings with just 4 walks. Seems like he is healthy now, velocity has been up and seems to have control of his pitches for now too which is what has plagued him in his previous chances in Chicago.

Cam Smith was promoted to AA and is now a top 100 prospect according to MLB.com. He has been the hottest hitter in the 2024 draft

My hope after last nights performance was the nail in the coffin for the FO philosophy of having multiple rotation arms be glorified long relief pitchers. Go get a bonafide SP or two. Don’t trust Assad/Wicks, and don’t automatically hand the reigns to Horton with how his season panned out.

Agree, he shouldn't be anything more than an emergency depth guy down on the farm. Assad has to be SP4 doesn't he?
