Apparently Nico’s people contacted Oregon and Lanning told Heupel that he was shopping around.

Not shocked, imagine if Nico just told his agent to get busy making phone calls to get him actual NIL legit funds this wouldn’t be happening

This is a good reminder that these schools don't have to capitulate if they don't want to. Nobody is forcing their hand and making them pay. They don't have to price match. It's always their option to say "no thanks. It's been nice knowing you."
They need contracts

Doing it in the spring was nice of him. He has a redshirt available, so he could have brought this up in the fall when it would have put Tennessee in a more difficult situation. I get the urgency from the House settlement looming, but I don’t see FMV holding up

In a similar vein, until there are contracts and consequences, players should consider holding out for more money in high leverage moments, like for the NCAA Tournament or major bowl games. Particularly seniors, which have no future earnings to lose. Prisoner’s dilemma most likely means even those with eligibility could gain

Testifying
I don't know what SC's QB room looks like but Lincoln Riley is the type to sign him.
Would Utah shock anyone?

Does or will that happen in basketball? If so it is so sad and weird that college sports has turned down this road.

Behind you
Tennessee softball pitcher throws it 75+ mph, they just beat Texas. A 75 mph pitch in softball is the equivalent of a 100+ mph pitch in baseball. Pretty unreal.

This is just a shot in the dark and I'm sure he has no connection to them, but I have a feeling Nico ends up at UCF

Didn’t he have a contract with Tennessee? I thought it was for $8m over the course of his career there. Nico just wanted more than what he agreed to previously.

As he should, until there are more legitimate contracts.

What do you mean legitimate contracts? He had a contract, he didn’t like the terms and decided to hold out. Even the NFL contracts wouldn’t prevent that. The kid is getting what he wanted. He’s on the open market again. We’ll see how that goes for him.

This is going to keep happening until CFB gets an antitrust exemption that allows for the NCAA to setup actual rules. Until then, their hands are tied. Any attempt to create rules around NIL will immediately go to court and they’ll lose.

He can't transfer to the SEC. What if the BIG and SEC teamed up and said no teams would take transfers in the spring from either the SEC or BIG? That would leave the ACC and the Big 12. But maybe the big 12 and acc would also join in, effectively killing the spring portal.

As long as there was a fall portal, I don't see how a court could say conferences could not have rules that benefit the sport. No sport has unlimited transfer options, not the NFL, not anybody.

The courts would levy a large fine to any members that publicly agreed to such a proposal. Collusion is still illegal in this country. It can certainly be done quietly, but I’d imagine FOIA laws would trip them up eventually with all the public institutions involved.

Waiting for someone to do this at about 7pm the Friday before a top 10 matchup. Half a million or I don’t think I’ll play tomorrow.

It’s coming, I guarantee. Someone will start a season unexpectedly hot and demand money mid season.
