There’s next to no way Montgomery can lose his spot is there? He’s so consistent. I don’t know if Chatwood would be at all serviceable as a long reliever in the bullpen but if they’re trying to win the division you can’t keep throwing Chatwood out there every 5th game

We are playing the 1st place team and a team we will likely be fighting for 1st all year long. It seems like today would be a great day to give 3 starters the day off. Joe is an idiot.

Joe does this all the time when off days are coming. It essentially gives players a 2.5 day break. The season is a marathon, not a sprint.

Bryant definitely needed a day off. He was struggling so bad at the plate that putting in a replacement might have actually been an upgrade.

Monty has probably been the 2nd best starter in the rotation after Lester in the stretch he has been filling in for Darvish. You have to hope once Darvish is back they find a way to stash Chatwood on the DL for a bit, send him on "rehab" to Iowa for a few starts then figure out where he fits. Monty in 4 starts has a 1.14 ERA with 14K to 3 BB in 23 2/3 innings and should have won that game yesterday had the offense done anything. He plays to contact and has good command of his pitches, the more he gets stretched out I can see him going 7+ innings consistently which is exactly what this team needs because for as good as the bullpen has been it has been used a lot of innings so far.

Good read on just how good he has been as a starter so far: http://www.bleachernation.com/2018/...s-a-cubs-starter-so-what-happens-longer-term/ If putting your best players on the field no matter what is important to Maddon and the front office you have to keep him in the rotation and just admit that Chatwood was a mistake. The Cubs ate the last 2 years of Edwin Jackson's contract and he signed for nearly the same per year salary that Chatwood is costing them. I hate to give up on a guy in the first year of a deal but he's been that bad and with no minor league options what else can you do? Turn him into a very expensive mop up reliever you only bring in blowouts because with his control issues right now I wouldn't trust him to get out of an inning cleanly regardless of the score. The best thing that could happen is for him to come up with an injury that they could buy some time with him for now and hopefully straighten him out on a rehab assignment.
