Some other thoughts on today's game after nerding out on some stats
  • Cyclones held Baylor below their season offensive efficiency number (1.16 vs 1.11 today) and forced them into 19 turnovers vs 11.8/game coming into today's contest. We all know the Cyclones play elite defense, but today's showing helps underscore the threat the Cyclones pose to even the best teams. And credit Baylor having dudes who can get buckets in key junctures of the game and help them win in spite of their sub par offensive performance today.
  • Cyclones also drew 22 fouls, 7 more than Baylor commits on average, that led to a 27-14 edge in Free Throw attempts. While this might seem a mundane stat, I think this is an under appreciated aspect of the Cyclones' success this season. Getting opponents in foul trouble and extra bites at the apple on the free throw line, when combined with the elite defense described above, can be a formula for "winning ugly".
  • Cyclones' Offensive Efficiency today (1.043) was actually better than their season average (1.026). This is largely due to Brockington and Enaruna having hugely efficient games today, while some other players struggled against Baylor's tough defense. Enaruna could be a game changer. If the light is really coming on for him, it could be a change this season's trajectory for the better.
  • Unfortunately, Kalsheur has been trending down offensively. His offensive rating has gone from 175 vs Iowa to 6.2 today). Kunc, who has had a great offensive rating trend since Iowa (ave 146 from Iowa to Chi State), dipped to 52.6% today. In Jaz's case, I think today was a one-off because of the match up. If we can help Kalsheur get back to his early season form and get him, Hunter, Brockington, Enaruna, Kunc, Conditt and Jackson (Kalsheur plus our top 6 in terms of Offensive Rating the last 5 games) ample run together, that should help increase our odds of generating sufficient offense.
Overall, the Cyclones' defense remains elite. The offensive identity and the consistent scoring punch is almost there to solidify a formula that can consistently succeed in the Big 12.
FWIW, today was probably Baylor's second best offensive outing on the year, meanwhile Bart Torvik has it as our 3rd worst defensive performance.

Some of those unforced turnovers also seemed like it could be Baylor's defense causing them to rush some plays and get a bit sloppy. We've done the same thing to some of our opponents.

The good news is Baylor is probably the best defense we'll see all year.
Didn't we have 16 against Chicago St? I think it is something we need to clean up

This team is all about defense, rebounding, and toughness. Specifically toughness to TJ is playing with elite effort at all times every possession. It's about competing. This team competes. He's said it many times. Rob Jones embodies that. We need to embrace that. Many of us are struggling to truly embrace that, which is understandable. It's a big change to digest, but it needs to happen sooner than later for the good of the program going forward.

It's going to be ugly 80-90% of the time. Rob Jones is not the reason we shot 1-14 from 3. He was never asked to fix that at all. He played his best game IMO doing what he has been asked to do, and it's a weird timing for some to call for his head. Baylor is really good. They made a ton of big shots...clutch shots...Tough shots. Most of our makes were good hustle and system shots, but fairly uncontested and routine. There's good and bad to take away from both. I think overall we dictated pretty well and made Baylor earn it. I promise you nothing drastic will change on our end and I think that's the right call.

Well was hoping for the W, but happy with the way we played. Some of those shots Baylor hit were tough. Well time to get ready for the next one. Crowd looked good on tv had the sound off because family gathering so couldn't judge the noise.

Sorry, but this is a false dilemma and over-simplification. Carter Boothe is one tough SOB, but the net impact on the game is what we're all about.

We have a guy or two that have such poor offense right now, their defense does not offset it. It is only game 13 and Game 1 of what really matters, so no need to pull the trigger yet, but if the play continues adjustments will be made

I'm wondering if this was due to Baylors success or our failures? I'm hoping it's the former, but I'm not enough of a basketball mind to know.

This is not new,but the contrast between a home game in Ames vs. one in Norman is quite marked. Just checking on this K-State at Oklahoma game, you can hear coaches yelling out instructions and random comments from the stands.Quite different than Hilton.

I would say very much so particularly one shooting guard touted as a shooter who has been probably our worst guard at shooting so far.... as opposed to a backup center who was brought in with a well-publicized disclaimer that he is not a scorer and never will be.

I like Jones when he is needed, but the less he is needed, the better, don't you think?

It is true that guys with otherwise minimal value can be contributors when you play good team defense and rebound as a team. Everyone doing their job matters now. Jones would not be worth much on the last two teams, as few did their job.

I saw Kalscheur as a freshman in the NCAA tourney in Des Moines. Think he went for 27 and 6 or 7 threes. I don't understand how you can do that as a true freshman then be in this bad of a slump 3 years later.
I've been to a couple games in person this year also and you can tell is shot is off thr minute it leaves his hands. I don't get it.

Some random bullets from my first game in a year or so.

Pregame
  • The drive up was speed limit, no issues on I-35 or the way into parking.
  • It was my first time at Boulder Tap House. Beer selection and food were decent. Service was a little lacking, but with no students in town and the crowd they had, it was adequate.
  • The long walk into Hilton was brutal ass cold walking into that wind.
Game
  • Seats were behind the basket. It was kind of hard to see all the action looking through the backboard, but it was good being down close.
  • Early in the first half on the Conditt dunk after the steal….it felt like Hilton Magic was back. I could literally feel the pressure in my ears with how loud that place got. It never got that loud again, but it was hopping a few times.
  • Obviously Enaruna is the MVP. Crazy good game by that kid.
  • Kalscheur was BAAAAAD. Basically a liability out there today. Something is not right in his head.
  • Hunter is going to be special.
  • I LOVE this team. They never gave up. A couple of times when it got to double digits and it could have gotten away, they fought back. It was great to see.
  • We have to start making more three throws.
  • 1-14 from 3 and lose by 5 to that team? I’ll take it.
Baylor
  • They are definitely #1 and deserve it. Great D. Excellent ball movement. They get (and make) great shots at the end of the shot clock.
  • Akinjo is baller. Watching him in person I was blown the frick away. So quick and smooth.
  • They have some big dudes that can shoot and handle the ball.
Had a blast at the game with the family. The drive home wasn’t bad, but it got a little sketchy a couple of times. We have tickets to Kansas in Feb, looking forward to it already.

lot of good points and I agree with most of them. 5 minutes into the game I would’ve agreed with your free throw point as it seems we only cashed one of the two free throw la each time we went to the line but after that, we mainly hit the rest. I think the team had a ft percentage of like 80% when the game was over.

Fair enough. Conditt being a foul magnet means he's needed pretty regularly. Ideally Conditt rarely gets fouls, plays 30 mins or more and you can go with Rob Jones for 0-5 ish minutes and go small 5-10 ish minutes depending on effectiveness and matchup. And lose nothing in culture and intangibles or send mixed signals.

Conditt made it 10+ without fouling tonight, sat him until the under the next media, and then he went back in and picked up two fouls immediately. Can't manage him much better than that. It just happens like clockwork.

He's also a culture guy that you can point to and say see? This is who you have to outwork everyday no matter how talented you are. If you cave on that you cave on so much more than one guy's minutes from a bigger picture standpoint. Nothing about TJ and staff's words and actions at any point indicate they are going to deviate from that approach.

I'm as concerned about turnovers, 6 today.

I'm afraid it is in his head now. After missing those first 2 threes early I don't think he even took another shot did he?

I think this is a good point that people should keep in mind. For this team to be good, they have to be great every practice. If rewarding Jones with a handful of minutes if he is serviceable for bringing elite effort in practice helps make the team compete hard every practice, then so be it. Not to mention, Jaz just didn’t have it today unfortunately.
Very encouraged by Enaruna. With him at this level this team has a pretty high ceiling. I think a typical shooting day by Jaz or Grill and things open up with guys attacking the rim. I would like to see Gabe try to attack the basket more. At least early to get going.

This. That's probably a shot he can become more consistent with sooner vs 3 pointer or midrange. Get Stinson on the horn or show him some tape...If he could get close to Curtis' level...WATCH OUT

He’s not on DRose level but his game and physical build is much more like Smart and Rose than our two recent NBA Cyclone point guards.

I watched the majority of Rose’s games in Chicago and Hunter’s block today was identical to the kind of play Rose would make.
