My only complaint today is that TJ called a defensive timeout in Hilton after a made basket. Brought back painful painful memories.

…just kidding…kind of

Was the situation for this? Like was it late when they needed to make an adjustment or was it in the middle of a run?

My observations from Hilton:

Baylor has so much success in sports and that university deserves none of it

The new PA announcer isn’t nearly as good at helping Hilton get rocking

I didn’t think we played well at all and still lost to the #1 team by 5

6 turnovers. 0-2 shooting. ONE rebound. 25 minutes. That’s really bad.

There’s something going on with him. He’s just not mentally in the game for long stretches. The late TO was just so Gabe, unfortunately. He had the great game in Brooklyn so we know it’s possible but the number of awful turnovers and shots that aren’t even close to going in says a change is needed. I have zero confidence in him making any shots, and that includes layups and other bunnies. Almost wonder if he has the basketball version of the “yips” going on. It looks much more mental than physical.

It was really frustrating to watch him play today. Two good looks from three right away and he never even tried to score again. And the turnovers by him were killers. Feels like it's mental for him. I really hope he can get some consistency, because he plays really hard.

I think other teams know to go right at him to get him flustered and it's important to beating ISU.

both teams were impressive, from my perspective. hats off to them for playing and coaching a great game.
Yeah they had an answer every time we got momentum. They hit some shots with a very high degree of difficulty. We didn't shoot well from outside at all, and we still were respectable. I'm not one for moral victories, but we don't have to hang our heads after this game.

Here are some articles on three point defence:

In the second and third articles, Ken Pomeroy determined that the offence has about 83% of the influence over three point percentage in a given game. That's the third-largest influence the offence has over any statistic, behind free throw percentage and average possession length. So there is some defensive influence, but not a huge amount. Granted, this analysis was done in 2015. It might be reasonable that these results have changed since the line moved back and with style of play changes.
Well we do know 3P shooting was a question mark coming in. Is it shocking this team had a poor shooting game? I don't think so.

I recall he was just using blackbox results of cumulative box scores, not actual measure of defensive influence. Are we assuming defense has no variance, and that a team yielding a X% on defense is always that? There is also the second order consideration that if a team's defense is actually impacting an opponent, it manifests in attempts as much as percentage.

Most of these discussions come up when an outlier shooting night occurs. We as fans are likely to view these outlier events as occurring more frequently than they actually do. That would be more interesting- how often does a defense give up a % two standard deviations from off from norm.

We need him to get going, but maybe him shooting 3Ps to start the game counterproductive to that? His shot looks like he is guessing and trying out different strokes.

It would be great to get him some easy buckets to start the game

The late TO was on Enaruna. TE was cutting and then stopped in the middle of the lane.

That's really my question as well. It's clear Gabe isn't feeling his game and is searching for answers. Lot of season left, I'm not really sure how you fix that but there is time to find a way.

Wasn't that is MO coming out of Minnesota as well? Can have stellar nights but also nights where he disappears.

Not exactly sure.

My nephew doesn’t care for him ( u of m student). Texted me after the game his stats. He’s good friends with the player that left Utah went to Mn and went back to Utah. We need defense and leadership which he gives. I think he’s definitely more positive than negative for us.

Proud of our effort no doubt. Just couldn't believe how many end of shot clock tough shots Baylor made after our guys played pretty solid defense. They are so good and announcer Fran pointed out their development and he was right. How many guys made the layup up and over a defender with position but they made it high off and above the square of the backboard.
As for our offense, I fear teams will simply sag off of Gabe and Tyrese alot. That's not Brockington's game so don't think he should chuck more up. I realize its not worth thinking about, but I wonder if we would have had Johnson or Foster if we would be getting a little lift at the 3 pt. line, but they screwed that up. Man, if only we had that one more shooter.
Where's the Tyrus McGee clone we've been longing for.....?

Along those lines, since basically the need is a 3 and D guy, has anyone checked into someone like, say, Thom Mattas? Word is that he's connected with TJ, and has what it takes to play well at the highest levels.
