I think his beef was more with JP and that Mac got fired than it was with either of those guys. That's why he commented that "he was his own worst enemy" when trying to get the job? I took it that he spoke his mind to JP after Mac got let go and it killed his chances of ever getting the job while JP was AD.

Just my take on the interview.

Anyone else think he took a shot at Johnny Orr without really saying anything about Johnny Orr?

Loved it. He sounds much older than I would've expected. Sounded like you tried to wrap it up a few times and he wanted to talk. Too bad you have such a tight schedule. He's a treasure.

I was expecting to not really care about this podcast as I'm no football junkie and he was before my time, but after listening to it, got me hooked right away and loved it.

Loved the interview. No doubt Steve's offensive teams were fun to watch and the 2000 squad did have a great year.
But Chris, you need to get with a real "old timer" and watch some of Earle Bruce's squads from the mid to late 70's if you want to see the "greatest offensive team in Iowa State history". It's hard to beat their No. 2 national ranking.

I started the podcast twice and got thrown out at about the 4:45 mark both times (during Sage's bit). I don't know if it was exactly the same spot, but close enough. I finally had to download it and listen that way for it to work.

Too bad we never got him back for HC. Although he says that the game may have started to pass him by, he certainly knows how to coach talent when he gets it.
