Iowa City
OSU vs IOWA

this game? seems quiet

Of course it seems quiet. That was just an OSU highlight video(kinda like the game:smile:)You do know what "atmosphere" means, right?

Usually if Iowa gets completely dominated in a game, I tend to try and erase it from my memory. While the game sucked(although it went nuts when we cut it to 14-10), I will never forget it. It was an amazing day, between the extended tailgating, the Magic Bus rocking, Gameday being at Hubbard Park, the gold rush, white towels waving, flash bulbs popping, the stands being filled over an hour before the game kicked off, perfect weather, a nationally televised ABC night game, ect.

In 2004, we played Wisconsin at Kinnick for a share of the Big Ten title. And even that day really didn't compare in terms of atmosphere. Nobody is downgrading what the atmosphere is like for ISU/Iowa. It just doesn't compare to the OSU game. It may be a while before anything ever does.

How did the game hurt Iowa in the past? Have they gotten worse bowl bids because the specific reason was ISU wasn't a big enough win?

Iowa/ISU games probably do not compare because they've all been 11am or 1pm games as opposed to playing PSU/OSU or Wisconsin at night or late afternoon on national tv. ISU has played Iowa pretty well over the last 10-12 years, but Iowa fans still somewhat think ISU should be a walk in the park at times. ISU fans made plenty of noise in 2002...Still dont know how Iowa screwed that one up. Seneca Frickin Wallace

I like to go to non-Iowa games at Trice. That whole "dress as a seat" idea is really cool. Why can't Iowa think gimmicks like that up?

That's more proof of the long and storied tradition of Hawkeye football...

Hayden Fry 143-89-6 (0.616%), 3 Big Ten titles, 6 Bowl victories in 20 seasons.

Kirk Ferentz 81-55 (0.595%), 2 Big Ten titles, 5 Bowl victories in 11 seasons.

Kirk is gaining on "The Legendary One!"

And tell us what hoki football was like before hayden??? what was the winning like the 20 years before hayden? Got that winning percentage handy? Long and storied tradition my @rse.

Pretty spot on. It's hard for me to see an ISU fan say "I've been to Kinnick for games other than ISU and the atmophere isn't nearly as good."

You also have no rooting interest - no dog in the fight, so it makes sense that in your mind, the atmosphere wouldn't be that great.

And the same would apply to a hok fan in Trice for a game that is not the iowa game.

Of course it wouldn't. When you're at Kinnick for the Iowa/ISU game, you care about the outcome, don't you? You want Iowa State to win, and you're therefore involved in the game. Cheering, booing, yelling at the officials, running your mouth to opposing fans, etc. That being said, if you're at Kinnick later that same year (why you'd go, I have no idea, most of you people hate that place, but lets just say you had a reason to be there), and Iowa was playing a good team like Wisconsin or Penn State, the atmosphere in the building would be better than it was for the ISU game. Better opponent, better time slot, conference game....etc. But for the casual observer (in this case...you) it might not seem as good because you really don't give a **** who wins the game. You're probably cheering for Iowa to lose, but you're not going to make that opinion known like you would if ISU was out there.

That about sum it up?

Ooops, never mind, you got banned.

Most epically ironic post in site history?

I was at the Purdue-Iowa game in 2004 (as a SEP grad, went to watch Orton. turned out, he never made it to the field). This is still a game UI fans point to as one of the best atmospheres at Kinnick. 3 of my friends and I left in the fourth quarter because we were bored. I was literally falling asleep. Rooting interest has a huge effect on your perception of the atmosphere.

I totally agree with this. I can watch just about any college football game on TV, but to go live is a different animal since you can't switch the channels in between breaks.

I went to the Auburn/LSU game in Tiger Stadium at night in 2007 (the year LSU won their 2nd BCS NC) and the game was won by LSU on a last second TD with like 2 seconds left. I was bored as all get out the entire game and was wishing I stayed home and watched the ALCS.

I've been to 2 college football games I had no rooting interest in and both were Iowa/Minnesota games at Kinnick. Both times I thought the atmosphere was absolute ****, compared to the Iowa/ISU games I had seen there. My Hawkeye buddy kept looking at me saying "God. This HAS to blow Jack Trice out of the water", and I looked at him like he was an idiot.

Methinks the "Rooting Interest" Theory holds a lot of truth.

Of course it does. There are obvious exceptions like huge games, 1st experience in a stadium, etc.

But for the most part if you have no interest in who is going to win, it doesn't have that same feel.

The ONLY time I have been disappointed in the crowd at ISU was the 2004 Missouri game with the Big 12 North Championship on the line.

The only Iowa game I attended that didn't involve ISU was the 1998 game against Northwestern -- the last game of the season. It was Hayden last season at Iowa. It was the last home game of the season, the Hawks lost the game, the Hawks finished with a losing record -- 3-8. The stands at Kinnick weren't even half full. It was a cold, rainy and dreary day.

Had an Iowa fan been to the 2004 Nebraska game at Jack Trice, they would have walked away impressed about the atmosphere. Had I been at Kinnick when Ohio State played there, I would also be impressed by the atmosphere.
