And 40 to 45 days is a ton of time in a fluid situation. If the state of Iowa makes the same progress in the next 45 days it has in the previous it will be hard to justify shutting things down at that point. My point remains, this is not a decision that needs or should be made now. The AD has taken measures to prepare and they are in a good spot to wait and see.

There's no "decision." It's a non-enforceable recommendation. This isn't that difficult.

Problem is, this was only sort of a test run. You want to see a spike? Watch when all the students are able to come back. What we're seeing now, if I had to take a guess (and that's all I can do), this spike is from some students coming back to clean up their apartments and get ready for the June 30th / July 1st move date. I know a number of students moved out in March, when classes went online, but I imagine a number didn't close their leases with the hopes of coming back.

Couldn't the ISU Foundation find some money somewhere in their 1.3 billion dollar endowment to save the athletic department from one disastrous year?

The endowment isn't just a giant pot of money. It funds ongoing programs at ISU and/or has been specified for a certain purpose by donors. Even if that were going to happen, the university would almost certainly place a higher priority on minimizing damage to the academic side of the university. As it should.

You're still not getting it. There's no 'progress' to be made. The virus will still be an issue, and large events with tens of thousands of people will still be high risk events.

And no, the lead time on large events is such that this is exactly when this kind of decision starts getting made.

It's not just some meaningless statement. Their opinion carries weight with the public and media, obviously. It's premature and complicates an already complicated situation IMO.

Fear porn is back! COVID 19 is here forever... Time to realize we have to move on with life. Those who are at risk, shouldn't go. Those of us who are healthy, save the economy from depression! Bill Maher had a great video on this exact topic. This is young and healthy people's time to shine

For the millionth time, it isnt about 'if you are at risk, don't go'. It is about community spread, and large events have the ability to increase risk for the entire area, including those that don't attend.

Its also absurd that people like you come in here and call the recommendations of actual health experts 'fear porn'.

So a public health board shouldn't weigh in on the single most significant health issue in decades, because...people might listen to them?

Listen to yourself, man.

My gut tells me that this is politically motivated more than anything else.

so the health department is supposed to say that bringing thousands of people from all over the state/region is a good plan during a pandemic? What kind of health department is that! Their priority should be what is in the best interest of everyone’s health. Not what is best for an athletic department’s bottom line or what is best for sports fans’ fandom. Good grief.

You do realize that thousands of people every day walk into a Hy-Vee that is barely cleaned, right? We've seen millions of people March for BLM in the past month. No massive death tolls.. Iowa hospitals are laying people off and rural medical centers may close forever if we don't get back to a new normal. Wake up dude... How many peoples livelihood depends on athletics? Stop being selfish because you have a white collar job and can stay in your suburban home until medical experts get us more treatment.

Ah yes, the state representative who wants to destroy ISU athletics so she can stick it to her own district. How devious!

This thread got dumber faster than I ever expected it could.

No fall athletics would likely kill the Athletic department. A ton of sports would end up on the chopping block. I don't think broadcast revenue would be enough to support football, let alone the other sports.

The government and conferences would bail them out.

No in-person fall classes. Daily interactions of 10s of thousands of students in campus, at bars, house parties, etc. Too risky during a pandemic.

if you think class and sporting events are equivalent you are not very bright. And to think there won’t be a lot of restrictions for class is also not a good take.

You do realize that buying food is essential and football is just a frivolous game, right? Likewise with protesting people literally being murdered vs, again, a ******* game. And by the way, please do tell me what hyvee is cramming in tens of thousands of people at a time, i'd love to see that.

Absolutely hilarious that you call me selfish for wanting the recommendations of health officials to be followed when you want to put people's health in danger just so you can plant your ass in a stadium for a few hours. Its selfish people like you that are making our country the laughingstock of the world in handling this.

This is more about people visiting from other counties
Students come from all counties and all over the country that live in close quarters, parties, work in local restaurants etc - just seems odd they comment on fans going to games and nothing about holding classes - do they have no jurisdiction when it comes to school?
