On the plus side, I would think that either the OC or DC jobs would be appealing to people trying to move up the ladder. If (hopefully when) we really improve Chizik will likely leave. He is a southern guy who likes the south. He said that when he got here and has said nothing to change my impression of that. I just can't see him being here for the long haul. The sitting OC/DC would be in a position to take the reigns and be a HC following in his footsteps.

On the downer end of things, our 2010/11 schedules are brutal it would be tough for this vision to play out unless we have a monster year in '09.

BTW (thread hijack) who's responsible for those schedules. BVD or Pollard? My goodness...:skeptical: I'm talking about Utah and UConn, not the Big 12 side.

Here is an out there offensive coordinator suggestion, mainly bringing it up because he is a friend of mine, but I think Gene may have played with his dad in college.

He has a pretty impressive resume and seems to have a lot of connections. Ideally you would want him as the QB coach, but moving from S. Car. to ISU for the same position would never happen, he would need to have the OC promotion to entertain that kind of offer but it seems risky making a QB coach your OC.

The guy has been learning under Spurrier since he was 12. He was the guy who held his headset cord all through middle and high school... Probably a little young but a huge recruiter and good offensive mind...

That guy looks younger than me, he's not, but he looks it. I think that they will bring in some who will be OC/ QB coach and I doubt that they will hire him as a OC.

I hope the right decision is made.. defensively i hope gene gets somebody in that is extremely high energy..I love watching texas and seeing Will Muschamp getting fired up in players faces..jumping up and giving chest bumps after big plays..thats the kind of energy i think this team needs. If you go back to the kansas game in the first half .. the coaches were all over the place and i think it really rubbed off on the team. i may be way off here, but i think that is what iowa state needs!

Change in coordinators - Recruiting Impacts

Question for everyone, sorry if it has been covered in other threads, what is the impact to recruiting from changing coordinators? I was under the impression that coordinators played a critical role in recruiting to their 'system'. Given that we are in the heart of the recruiting season, will this change negatively impact our recruiting for next year?

Actually cybsball20, that would be a great pick-up for ISU. I think that's the route ISU ends up going. Picking up a position coach with potential from another school. I wouldn't think an OC or DC from Utah or a school like that would be interested. Those school's head coaches end up with big jobs and then they are next in line for the head coaching job. Or they end up as an OC or DC at ND or Tennessee or some place like that with openings. Best bet is a young energetic coach with potential. Kind of like recruiting. Trying to find somebody the big boys haven't noticed yet.

I don't think it's an issue since we retained Bolt and McFarland.

Unfortunately, when you hire people like this, they have just as much potential to suck. I don't think they will demote a former head coach to hire someone who has never been a coordinator. Especially someone that is barely in their thirties- a little too young for my liking.

I agree with this. I think it's telling that both McFarland and Bolt agreed to stay on, I think it indicates that the replacements will be a significant upgrade in prestige level. That doesn't preclude young or energetic, but I think Chizik & JP are going to bring in some people with experience (especially experience winning).

Based on the information in the Rivals database, it looks like they put him on recruiting in 2006. Previous years show no targets. FWIW...

2006: landed 1 4-star and 1 3-star
2007: landed 5 4-stars and 2 3-stars
2008: was skunked on all of his targets
2009: has landed 2 4-stars, 1 3-star, 1 2-star

Looks to be a solid recruiter, then again he's recruiting mostly SC kids to go play for USC. Not a difficult job, especially when compared to recruiting to ISU.

It's a young mans game. When OU won their latest NC they had a bunch of young coaches on their staff. Mangino was the OC and that was the first time he had ever held that position. When K-State made their unbelievable run, they did it with a bunch of unknown young coaches. What experience are you talking about? If they already hold a OC or DC position why would they go to ISU? If they are at a winning non-BCS school they know they will be next in line for the head coaching job (because those guys head coaches are always moving up) or the same position at a known football school. Why would they take a job that on paper looks like the whole staff could be fired within a couple of years? McFarland and Bolt still have a job. That's probably why they agreed to stay on? I wouldn't think there is a lot of schools coming after them. Youth is the way to go, they are great recruiters and have endless energy. Both coordinators are running what the head coach wants them to run, so if don't like the scheme you need to look up at the top first. Places like ISU and KU have to work harder to recruit players than some other schools in the conference. Young coaches are better suited for that.

No chance and if there is a chance Gene will have blown his last shot. Koonz helped to coach the worst unit on the team and has no experience to be a D1 coordinator. On top of that, we would have a coach who was under Bolt suddenly become Bolt's boss. Not gonna happen.

Whomever is mentioning Greg Robinson must have never watched the Chiefs defenses when he coached there. That guy can stay as far away as possible as far as I'm concerned.
Thats hilarious!!! That was the same exact thought that crossed my mind when I read that post.

How about Chuck Long. He was good at OU. Has head coaching experience. Knows our state. It would make Hawk fans furious.

On the Defensive side I would like a guy that is around 50 years old and can coach a good aggressive defense.

Chuck Long ..... I think I just puked in my mouth. Trust me the Sooners fans were not sad when he left. Brutal coach

For some reason I can't stand Muschamp. He seems to much like Ron Prince to me on the sidelines. I know he isn't that bad but he gets really into it like Prince

Doubt it. I like Koonz and he will be a big-time coach someday, but he's like 26 years old. Moving him to DC will mean Bolt will leave along with several others that feel they would be more worthy of the position. In 10 years, this might be a good possibility, but not today.
