That is a nice line up. Watch out for Kent State, who lost to UNI on criteria (59-58 on points).

Kent State's Sam Wheeler (#13 at 184) just got suspended indefinitely for inappropriate tweets about Missouri football player Sam.

They are our likely first round opponent (depending on how much the rankings change when they come out tomorrow). But their #13 ranked 184 pounder just got suspended indefinitely today for something he was tweeting. Good for our win chances, bad for 184 since that was our best shot at picking up a marquee win. I would be very surprised if he took the mat this weekend.

Come on Sam you have to know better, especially as a role model for young kids, student athlete and recognizable individual. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and standing up for what they believe in as long as it is in a respectful manner but he not only crossed the line he did it on a social media platform = not smart at all

New USA Today rankings are out, which I assume will be used for seeds at the National Duals (since the NWCA sponsors both). If that is correct we'll be the #6 seed and get #11 Kent State in the first round. Who knows if Wheeler will sit the whole weekend but I'd be amazed if he doesn't at least sit the first dual.

If they don't just use the USA Today rankings for seeds then NDSU, Oregon State, and Central Michigan are all possible first round opponents.

I'm going to check out the lineups of both Kent State and Central Michigan to see how we compare - Kent State has more votes in the coaches poll, but both are outside the top 25 and Central Michigan owns a win over Kent State earlier this season. So they might swap seeds.

Bring on the Bison.

We already beat them once. It actually would be a good opportunity for us - Moreno would get another shot at Monk and if Beard got another win over their #20 ranked 184 pounder it would be a quality win for him.

I heard somewhere that Oklahoma might have pulled out of the National Duals. I suppose with Patterson, the 184 pounder, and somebody else are all injured

I wouldn't put it past them. They have no shame when it comes to protecting their seeds.

That would push us up to the #5 seed and give us Bloomsberg or Hofstra in the first round. It would also be good because that would give us Virginia Tech in the second round and not put us in position to have a rematch with Minnesota or Oklahoma

It might be somebody mistaken Ok State for Oklahoma. Can't find anything official that Oklahoma won't be there

Even if Oklahoma is there, if we beat our first round opponent I'm not entirely sure that we lose to them if they keep sitting everybody. Hell, I'm not sure if they even beat their first round opponent.

Kent State matches up with us better than I'd like. They have low ranked guys from 133-149 to go up against the weakest part of our lineup. Though their two best wrestlers will likely be out. Ian Miller (arm injury) at 157 and Sam Wheeler (bigotry/idiocy) at 184.

It also looks like they swapped us and Virginia Tech in the brackets to avoid a potential second round rematch against Oklahoma.

Quick look at records and results from the Southern Scuffle says they are favored in 5 matches, we're favored in 4, and 1 toss up.

125: Toss up
133: Kent favored heavily
141: Kent favored heavily
149: Kent favored (beat Goettl 7-2 at the Scuffle)
157: Kent favored slightly or tossup (assuming Miller is out, otherwise Kent State heavily favored)
165: ISU favored heavily
174: ISU favored heavily
184: ISU favored (assuming Wheeler is out, otherwise Kent favored)
197: ISU favored heavily
HWT: Kent favored

The strength of their lineup matches pretty much exactly with the weakness of our lineup. So we'll likely need bonus points and/or a win our two out of Hall, Goettl, Nicholson, or Smith. Nicholson should have a pretty good shot at their backup 157 pounder.

I started looking this morning at the actual matchups. Kent State uses two guys at 125. Del Vinas and Alfredo Grey. Vinas has taken the mat the past few duals so I assume we'll see him.

Hall and Vinas have never met but have three common opponents. Both lost to Peters of UNI. Hall owns a pin over Brandon Jeske of Old Dominion and while Vinas lost to Jeske 0-5. However, that was back in November for both of them and Hall was tied with Jeske when he got the pin. Hall also has a 3-4 loss to Nick Roberts of Ohio State who has beaten Vinas twice, once 5-6 and once by a 0-16 tech fall. Hall is wrestling at a much lower level than he was in December. And Vinas has a much better overall record. 20-13 vs D-1 opponents as opposed to 9-10 for Hall. So I'd call it a toss up match because I'm really not feeling overly confident in Hall lately. Hall is very capable of rolling the guy, but that would involve getting takedowns. And Hall appears to have taken an oath against takedowns.

If they send Alfredo Grey out there then I think Hall is the favorite even with his recent performances. Hall has solid wins over both of their common opponents and Grey was solidly beaten by both of them.

Expectation: Whoever wins this match will set the tone for the dual. If we get a win here we're in very good shape to win the dual. If they pick up the win then we might be looking at the consolation bracket.

I am told we are sending around 16 guys to National Duals. I assume Hall and Larson, Molina and Nicholson, Beard and Weatherspoon

Not sure on the other 3. Maybe Powell. Swope or Perna, and maybe Hallman or Bauer

133, 141, 149, 165, 174, and 197 are all pretty clear, and 184 is as well (Wheeler in: they are heavy favorites, Wheeler out, we are favorites). So 157 (assuming #4 Ian Miller is out) and HWT are the only other ones that need to be looked at closely.

At 157 Kent State has generally been using T.J. Keklak since Miller got hurt. Keklak was a .500 reserve at 149 who has bumped up. The only mutual opponent between Nicholson and Keklak is Jensen of UNI, who Nicholson beat 6-3 and Keklak beat 9-7. Now that I've looked more closely at it I'm going to upgrade this from Kent State being favored to a toss-up. I'd prefer to say that ISU is favored, but like most of the team, Nicholson hasn't shown much lately.

Expectation: From 133-149 we're probably going to give up a lot of points. So a win here would staunch the blood going into a string of weights where we will be favored. If Hall loses at 125 then this is a must win for the dual. If Hall wins at 125 then this win would take the pressure off our guys from 165-197 to have to score bonus points to put the dual out of reach. If Wheeler at 184 wrestles then this becomes a must win even if Hall wins it at 125.
