My dad in the Armory in 1957 after KU victory

Had to share this with you guys. I was watching an alumni association video interview with Gary Thompson and they showed a still photo of the aftermath of Iowa State's legendary victory over Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas in 1957. My grandpa was an ROTC Sergeant and his office was in the Armory. My dad was sports editor of the Daily and covered a lot of basketball games there. When this photo popped up, my eyes went right to my dad on the court, carrying his camera, as he always was. A few feet away you can see Wilt the Stilt making his way off the court. Dad died in 2013 so it's always a thrill when I come across something like this.

Played KU 3x that year. First game, pretty close too, only lost by 1 point!

Well, the ROTC was housed in there as well, so I think it was a pretty patriotic building!

Gary said something like,"No disrespect to Hilton Magic but it was loud." Steel bleachers and everyone stomped on them.

While the attached photo was not from that actual game, my Dad played in that game as a back up Sophomore point guard (He started at PG his Junior & Senior year).

My mom and dad were at that game, 1-15-1957. Older brother at a sitters in the Pammell Court community.

I was born in Mary Greeley 10-15-1957. Coincidence,.....I think not!

Probably because the Soviets were trying to take over Europe and destroy the United States. It was probably a good thing to display the colors. Didn't want to be labeled a Commie. And, it was in an Armory.

My dad has about an inch long piece of the net from that game in his scrapbook. At 81 years of age he still loves to talk about that game

I guess I never made the connection. I think I was only in there one time while I was as in school, maybe orientation, a final, I’m not sure. I don’t recall it looking particularly “ militaristic” at the time though.

A sidetrack, but I wonder what it was like to watch games for a lot of years at The Armory, then attend games when Hilton opened. (Similar curiosity of changeover from Clyde Williams to JTS).
