Let's not forget that Iowa went to the Alamo Bowl in part because a 6-6 record put them at FOURTH in the Big Ten! The disparity in that conference has helped them out big time.

If they finish in a 3-way tie with Northwestern and Indiana, hopefully those teams have the tiebreakers over Iowa. I know tiebreakers don't really mean anything in bowl selection you'd hope that a rational person would look at that.

Tiebreakers don't mean jack in the Big 10. Last year, Northwestern, Indiana, and Minnesota all were bowl eligible, and all beat Iowa.....but Iowa went to a better bowl game than all of them with their 6-6 record and 2-6 conference record. It was a gutless selection by the Alamo Bowl.

You were talking about last season right? I don't remember them being 4th in the conferece with only 2 Big 10 wins.

They were not fourth, but the fourth bowl team. Alamo leap frogged Indiana and Minnesota to take Iowa. OSU and Wisc went bcs if I remember.

So they did. My bad, I must have been thinking about their being selected for the Alamo Bowl as them being higher in the Big Ten standings.

So how the hell do all these teams get to go to bowls? you get 4 non-conference games now. Why do all these teams get rewarded to beat 4 cream puffs and then beat 2 bottom feeders in conference to get to bowl eligble?
The Big 10 only has 7 bowl spots right?
1- BCS (OSU)
2 -CAP1 (MICH)
3- Outback
4- Alamo -
5 - Champs Sports
6 - Insight
7 - Motor City
If OSU and MICH get the first 2 bids then that leaves 5 spots for 8 Teams:
Penn State, Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin, Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan State and Iowa (minny is out). My prediction is that Iowa goes to Champs, Insight or At large. Most Likely going to finish 6-6 (3-4) at go to Insight IMO. Really sad that bowls have lost this much crediblity. Here is what 7 wins in 05, 6 wins in 06, and 6 wins in 07 would get them in the big 12.
05 - Independence/Texas bowl Big 10 - Outback
07 - Not Attending Big 10 - Alamo
08 - Not Attending Big 10 - ??Insight??

That is what made Iowa's trip to the Alamo so tough to swallow. They had some embarrassing losses but still leapfrogged more deserving teams to play in a somewhat prestigious (by our standards) bowl. We would need to win at least 9 games to go to the Alamo Bowl. Iowa and their "reputation" got an absolute gift.

Another Check against the NCAA in my book. They are so worried about players getting money etc..., but they are willing to through so many teams under the bus and let the sponsors control what teams they can have come to their bowls. I understand WHY they let them do it, but I think they need some sort of change involved or something.
Rewarding a team that has with a .300 conference winning average in the last 3 years by letting them go to upper tier bowls is crazy. Imagine if ISU when 12-2 in non conference basketball and then only won 4 conference games against Baylor and Texas tech, Nebraska, KState and Mizzou and the commitee made us a 6 seed. On top of that imagine if we got a better seed or left some teams out of the tourney in the Big 12 b/c of fan support. You see how dumb that is?

I think they almost need to make it 7 games for Bowl eligibility and maybe even force a .500 record in conference. I know that would hurt ISU, but geez....The amount of sucky teams in bowls in crazy today.

Umm, not to pick nits, but how do you think ISU got to bowls a few years back. Beating cream puffs in the non conf, and then beating bottom feeders in the big12.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

That will never happen, too much $$.

I remember a situation a few years back where if a certain few games would have went the other way, there would not have been enough bowl eligible div I teams. So one of the lesser bowls was going to have to consider cancelling because they might be able to invite anyone.

While I agree, we at least won more than 2 conference games.

2000: 5-3 in conf (beat Okla State, Baylor, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas; lost to Nebraska, K-State, and A&M)
2001: 4-4 in conf (beat Baylor, Okla State, Missouri, and Kansas; lost to Nebraska, A&M, Colorado, and K-State)
2002: 4-4 in conf (started 3-0...; beat Kansas, Nebraska, Tech, Missouri; lost to Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State, and Colorado)
2004: 4-4 in conf (beat Baylor, Kansas, Nebraska, and K-State; lost to Okla State, A&M, Colorado, and Missouri)
2005: 4-4 in conf (beat Okla State, A&M, K-State, and Colorado; lost to Nebraska, Baylor, Missouri, and Kansas)

Our overall record was at least above .500 each year going into the bowl game:

2000: 8-3
2001: 7-4
2002: 7-6
2004: 6-5
2005: 7-4
