I don't need the season to be complete to see that we would have won more games this year with Wes Johnson than without. You certainly have an argument, but we'll never know.

It has been a pretty sad trend for the team and ISU fans.... losing a missing piece before the season starts. IMO we would have at least been an NIT team, maybe an NCAA team last year if Taylor would have hit the books and stuck around. IMO we would be in the same position this year if WJ wasn't a punk quitter. It's doable yet...many doubt it, but doesn't change anything.

Man do I hope we don't continue that trend next year.... my worry is that Brackins will come out a year too early and he will be the missing piece next season. Doubtful...but you never know

Do you think we could possibly see a guard (or two) redshirting next season, if we don't have any attrition at the position?

With the numbers we would have in the guard court, at least 1 or 2 of the guards won't get that much PT. I wonder if the odd man out would redshirt? All of them have a RS year to use except for SC.
Who are you going to ask to redshirt?

Whoever (if anyone) is not seeing playing time... I guess most people don't want to redshirt but I would think it would be preferable to burning a year without seeing any PT.

I am just looking at numbers here, unless we always go small and play Gilstrap at PF, there will probably be at least one odd man out of the rotation.

In a year I think we'll be very good, barring unforseen injuries or defections. Kind of like the football team, the freshmen and sophmores will have a year of experience and the newbies will have less pressure to learn and contribute right away. That said, if a couple of guys start stepping up yet this season, really good things are possible.

We're starting to play pretty good team defense, and when you can slow a better team down, it creates more chances for success.

Buckley, Boozer, Vanderbeken, or Mann; any one could start contributing more and make a huge difference.

We've got more depth now than in quite a while. Just wait, good things are going to happen.

Tough ****, get better...Can't make everybody 100% happy with PT.

I agree with the initial post in this thread...I also think another year of weights will help this team immensely...Colvin and Gilstrap both help fill a void that we are lacking in athleticism and a good sized wing that can bang as well...and another thing that has me excited is that although Brackins and Hamilton have improved a lot in their time here...neither are anywhere close to where they are going to be by the time they leave (assuming Brackins doesn't listen to bad advice at the end of this season).

As I see it, we have a 2 guard who does not have a great outside shot playing PG: a walkon with a lot of heart playing 2G: and a 2 guard who might be a step slow playing SF. And that adds up to three pieces. But I think we are getting closer.

Alright i agree that DG has made some mistakes this year but who hasn't? But, really think about it if we didn't have DG we would be in a world of hurt right about now.. He has done everything asked of him he is passing the ball alot better this year, he's knocking down alot more shots this year and he's driving the lane decent this year.. So idk if i'm the only one but I really like having DG as our point guard and i think he will only get better in the coming years

I wouldn't redshirt a guard. No way...no how. Injury would be the exception. If they aren't good enough to play I don't want to hold up their scholarship any longer than necessary. Develop them but keep the clock running.

I agree for the most post...the lone exception being if you are deep already at the position-and you have a talented player that lacks strength (see Farnold Degand).

Very good point...

What are you basing this on? Comparing us to Top 20 teams that have tons of bench depth, one of which we competed with last Saturday and with as hard as we played with the squad that we have one th road..... There is a difference between 20 wins and making the post season sucess, and winning your conference and making a run at the National Title..... Comparing us to those teams is ridiculous, not so say that we could not compete with those teams....

Sorry for the delayed response. All I meant was that the original post said that we are one piece away from being "really good". In order for us to compete in the top half of the the big twelve, we would need to be in - or at least consistently flirting with - the top 20. All four of the teams I mentioned are at that point. I can't see how adding one player to the existing team will put us at that level. I like our team and I like what appears to be coming in in the future, I just think we are at least two or maybe three pieces away from playing at the level that they are at.

Fair enough response...I'm not sure if we'll be a top 20 team next year, but I think we'll be a tourney team...my reasoning for that is that I think Colvin and Gilstrap will tremendously help out our team athleticism, which I think is one of our biggest weaknesses. I also like the young talent and upsides of our young players very much...I think we have young talent that is nowhere close to it's ceiling for potential right now and another offseason of adding strength will do wonders for that...barring Brackins going pro...next year we'll be stronger, quicker, more versatile, just as deep (if not deeper), and just as good of a shooting team from the outside...Brackins won't have to shoot 20 times a game next year because he'll have more help, and we'll be able to hold our own on the boards and defense much better because of added strength and athleticism.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I can't see Garrett playing the 2 spot. He's not a good enough shooter. I don't know how good Colvin will be but I can't see Buckley taking the starting spot from Garrett.

We'll have a fairly tall lineup next season too

Garrett 6'4"
Lucca 6'5"
Gilstrap 6'7"
Brackins 6'10"
Hamilton 6'11"

I don't get the Garret at the 2 talk either. He is a pure PG to me, needs work, but by far his natural position. It also sounds like Colvin is much more of a combo gaurd...I'm not sure how much he'll contribute immediately, but he should definitely help.

That's why I say it's going to get interesting in the gaurd court. Buckley and Colvin are true points...Gilstrap pushes Lucca back to the 2. By playing Garrett and Buckley/Colvin we basically get two point guards but lose some shooting. where does Booze, Scott, Wes fit in. They all bring something different, which is a good thing.

We are getting closer, but still have a long way to go.

I might be the only one that thinks we are better because we don't have Wes J. on the team. I really think it was a positive that he left.

Be careful with a statement like that...you don't get better by losing a player like WJ.

Unless of course the team is playing together better:wink:

May or may not want to hear this but word is through coaching grape vine that Jim Boeheim has stated that the best player in the program for number 8 ranked Syracuse is WJ.
