What would be impressive is if we got a head coach to leave a BCS school located in sunny Arizona that he built from garbage to a bowl for another one that is perceived to be one of the worst jobs in the country (ours, of course).

I say perceived because I believe our job is a steal. The bar was left very low, yet there is legitimate potential in the locker room, solid fans, and a North Division that isn't within shouting distance of its counterpart. Because of all of this, our opening is a low risk, high reward job from the perspective of a coaching candidate.

Mike Stoops would be making a good move to come here and we would be making a good move in hiring a solid recruiting coach with legitimate experience against the type of competition we face. His teams have improved drastically in talent and production on both sides of the ball that are not reflected in his record. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Arizona went 9-3 next year. Then it will be, "Should have hired Stoops." This could be a perfect opportunity for us to get him before he looks to move to a much more prestigious program.

I think we need to eliminate the distain we have for the name, because he played / coached for Iowa.

Look @ it independantly from that. Like was said previously, who do you really think we are going to get? We need someone with a passion and expectation to WIN, someone that knows and has done it before (which he has). This would be good!

We also need a personality. Someone who will open up to the fan base and repair alot of damage, this is NOT Mike Stoops...

I didn't read every page on this thread and I'm sorry if someone has already said this : For those of you who think we have a chance at Gary Patterson, please take off your goggles! He has a top 15 team with TCU. Pay is better at TCU after you consider all the incentives. Weather in Fort Worth is great and has publicy stated that he intends to stay with TCU.

If in some miracle he does end up here, I will be the first to say that I was completely wrong, and start cooking my crow......

Right now, Stoops is winning in a BCS conference. Thats more than any other candidate on our list right now. So what if the Pac-10 is down? Quit ragging on him for being a Hawk too. Danny Mac was a Hawk, but there's no doubt he bled cardinal and gold till the day he left here. Did you guys really think we were going to get Gary Patterson? Seriously... Stoops isn't great, but Arizona is better than when he got here. He knows the midwest, and HE WANTS TO BE HERE. He was close to beating USC too. Is this a slam dunk sexy hire? No. But its a guy who has shown he knows what he's doing in a BCS conference, at a school that has very little football support from the fans or the AD. If he IS the guy (which he may not be) I'll support him. To anyone who is talking about turning in their fan card, **** you. Go be a ******* Hawk fan.

Check out what it says about Stoops on Wikipedia:

Michael J. Stoops (born December 31, 1961) was previously the head football coach at the University of Arizona, his first head coaching position. He previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, Kansas State University and the University of Oklahoma. He is the younger brother of Oklahoma head coach, Bob Stoops. Stoops is on the record as saying, "Leaving the University of Iowa was the best move I ever made. What a dump..."

IF true...

He wants someone from their staff, I'd assume.

Chuck Long has been rumored to be a front runner for the Illinois OC job. Perhaps that has changed, if Stoops is in line to get the ISU job, Chuck tells Illinois that he cannot take their job, because he is going to join Stoops at ISU?

I am totally guessing here, since I havent talked with Marty since making the first post.

Stoops would be a good hire at this point according to the requirements of posters on this board, as he is a head coach from a BCS conference who's team is better than ISU's at the moment (thanks to Chiz).

I'm seeing into the future...

ISU hires Stoops...does decent....Ferentz leaves UI.....Stoops leaves for UI.

It'll happen, it just makes too much sense.

I havent gone through allof the posts in this thread.. (its pretty long) but my only issue with stoops is..look at his recruting classes...they have been pretty dang good...(i know stars don't mean everything), but judging by classes he has brought in Arizona should have done much better than what they have in the last few years..can he develop talent? who knows, that just is a little bit of a red flag for me..i still wouldnt mind the hire

How can you not be excited about the idea of Mike Stoops taking the healm? He took a miserable Arizona team before he got there and has made them relevant in the fight to finish second in that conference.

In the five years preceding Stoops at AU, they won 22 games. In the five years of the Stoops era, they have won 24.

I don't mind this hire... it's not like we're getting worse with it! He'll make us respectable.. Good recruiter, a lot of history, would probably LOVE to coach against his brother and get people excited about the Oklahoma game. I like this hire if it happens...

Better than where we are at this very moment...

I will probably buy season tickets regardless but there is one thing that will send me over the edge. If Loney doesn't get an interview this time around and they hire a coach with a losing record from Iowa that may be the last straw. If JP ends up hiring some big name that others have talked about then I'm fine if they leave Loney out of the mix but to not even give a guy like Loney an interview is a crime.
