That would totally be me out watching that thing. I've never seen a tornado in person. Seen some funnel clouds drop down a bit, but never to the ground into a full fledged tornado.

I imagine even though it's been awhile, this was probably a little too close for those who were around in 1968.
It intensified as it went north. Leveled a hog barn and ripped a fan blade off a windmill just outside Lime Springs.
My uncle was there for that one. Needless to say, he's not one to run out to look at one.
It was on almost the same trajectory and then hopped to the west a bit and missed town. 3 Buildings at the fair grounds are gone, 4 more have enough damage that they at probably a complete loss. The only two to not get any damage were the show arena and the cattleman's beef quarters. A couple houses north of town were leveled.
I figured the Lime Springs/Saratoga one would have been F2-3 based on the damage, but they're saying only F1. I was under the impression that windmill blades could withstand windspeeds up to 150 MPH, so maybe the blades that snapped were defective.

They are calling it hail but today was the first time I'd heard hail amounts read like snow/rainfall, some parts of West O reported a foot of hail on the ground.
Agreed, I saw a report on KCCI as well calling it foot deep hail. That is insane. How much water would that be? That would have to correspond to at least 3-4 inches of rain all falling as hail.
Looks like a Scott Frost to me! Or a Fred Hailberg!
A co worker that lives in Council Bluffs said the first 15-20 minutes of the storm last night was all hail.
In other news, lots of people will be getting new roofs put on.
