Probably down to negotiations, but lots of smoke and rumors (from internal TTU) that Matt Wells will be the new head coach.

Rumor also has it that they were going to interview Dana H, today, but the TT AD cancelled the interview.

If correct, consider the fan base completely underwhelmed.

  • Why have we turned KH loose on this hire without any input from others?

He repeatedly said that he was going to search for a nationally recognized coach to lead us back to being an elite program and he offers up a coach that, except for one year, has a horrible won/loss record with the players that he recruited. His teams also have discipline issues off the field and are high in the nation in total penalties per game.

Kirby has shown how ineffective he is by having absolutely no plan for the inevitable. Every AD in America should have a list of potential replacements in his desk drawer. It appears that he woke up Sunday morning and decided to start the process and is wandering around in circles.

He takes credit for great hires in basketball and baseball but insiders claim that he was pushed into both by donors. His previous history of hiring a football coach at Miami was a disaster and he should not be released unsupervised on this one.

On the first day that he was here, he stated that his ultimate goal was to be a conference commissioner. Every move he has made has been with that in mind - from preening before the cameras on the selection committee to his Tech responsibilities.

He has no loyalty to Texas Tech and we should first get rid of him and let him go elswhere to pursue the Big 12 Commisioner job when it opens up.

Then we can hire a real coach with national recognition.

That oughta make those hillbillies a little restless...maybe it's an effort by Holgo to get his AD's attention to his salary or something else his program needs. A guy has to be careful, though, the PR can get away from you if you look disloyal.

Well if the Holgerson thing is true. He can't return to W Virginia. He will need to get a new job somewhere.

Ironically, Dana really doesn't hold much leverage as far as a new contract goes. There is a pretty significant portion of the WV fan base that want him gone.

Holgo is just pulling a Gundy. Building demand to get a bigger contract from WVU. He's already got the Gundyesk thinning mullet look. Lets just let TTU, WVU, and Okie St do a coaches musical chairs. Their offenses are all identical anyways.

If Dana was interested, there is zero chance Tech would have declined an interview. Sorry but I'm not buying it.

I am hearing from some inside the Program with similar information. So, there are several sources saying similar items. If true, I think this is a major mistake by the AD, regardless of if he still wanted to hire Wells. Do the interview, then make a decision. (Note I am in no way a fan of Dana,)

On second thought, this actually makes a bit of sense that Dana is putting the feelers out. He just lost his OC. Maybe WVU isn't willing to fork over the $ to get a quality hire and Dana enjoyed the CEO style of coaching. He may be looking to go elsewhere that is willing to front the cash to hire quality assistants and give him a little bump in pay too.

Holgerson has done well at WV and TT isn't exactly prime college football magnet so not sure why they would not at least interview him.

Kinda weird to show immediate interest in transferring to another conference school too...usually guys at least get out of the conference for a couple of years before coming back in, right?
