I remember Rhodes coming off the bench his first year for mop up time, after the game was already out of reach, everytime that he touched the ball the crowd would scream "SHOOT! SHOOT!" That guy had no fear. He would put it up from anywhere!

I just finished watching the first half. A few observations:

1. Why did Dr. Tom continue to press after every made basket? I know he liked to press, but ISU broke the press easily and got a lot of easy baskets. But everytime the Hawks got their half-court zone set up, the Clones struggled.

2. I forgot how dirty the Hawkeye team played.

3. I forgot how much I like Paul Doerfeld (sp?).

My half-time prediction. I think the Cyclones can pull this one out. They may have to go to overtime to win, but as long as Lafester stays hot we'll be OK.

I wish I was a little older than 6 months when that game was played, I would have really enjoyed watching it and not knowing who won before tip-off. The sad thing is i would have been a Hawkeye at the time, but at least i finally saw the light!

What a game...I remember it well. We beat a very good Iowa team, I had forgotten some of the players in the game until I watched it again. Both teams were very good and athletic, it will be an entirely different paced game tomorrow.

It has been a while since the magic at hilton was alive like that. Man I miss going to hilton and experiencing that atmosphere. Correct me if I am wrong but I think I noticed we were averaging 97 pts/gm at that time. I kinda miss that style of play right now. At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing GM letting this team do that tomorrow. I know it isn't the offense he is not "installing" but if we are going to go down let's go down blazin and not have to be subjected to a slow, painful loss.

I remember that day just like I remember where I was during the OK city bombing, 9-11 .. it is amazing how a moving event can stick in your head about where/what you were doing.

I am not trying to minimize the tragic events... it is just that hearing the final score on the radio, I remember everything from that day.

Me too...I graduated that afternoon in Hilton and sat in the arena circle that night with my girlfriend (now my wife)...what a great day!

Anyone remember what the Hawks assistants pushing and shoving Johnny at the end was all about? Wasn't Bruce Pearl one of them? I just don't remember what that was all about.

I had the joy of sitting in first row balcony seats for that game. I was SCREAMING at the person next to me during the overtime and he didn't hear a word that I said.

Some great quotes in this article in the Register..

ISU basketball: 'The Lafester Game' | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Here are my favorites...

Rhodes, who averaged fewer than 5 points per game his first three seasons in Ames, never cooled off. He had 44 points when he missed a layup inside of 4 minutes to play. Hallihan suggested to Orr that Rhodes was tired and needed a quick rest.

"I said, 'Hell, let him die,' " Orr said. "He's the only one making a basket. There's no way he's coming out of there."

_____

"During the course of the game, it didn't seem like the numbers were getting as big as they were," said Al Lorenzen, who started for Iowa that night. "When you're in Hilton, and that environment, you can barely hear yourself think, much less try to know how many points a guy has."

Watching that nearly brought me to tears because it is a perfect example of how Hilton Magic has died. Hate to reflect on the past, but it will never be the same as it was then. The games were such an event back then. You couldn't take my ticket from me at gunpoint. It was that important. Dear lord what has happened....

Bruce Pearl wasn't involved in the pushing at the end. It was another assistant whose name escapes me. I think his last name was Close or something like that. He was a Caucasion who had a disability.

Evidently he said something smart to Orr and of course Johnny wasn't going to let it go or back down from anyone.

My all-time favorite sports picture -- "Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr grabs the lapels of Iowa assistant Gary Close".

Orr was upset with Close after he yelled at the ISU bench following Johnny's hand shake with Dr. Tom. Orr said it all started when the officials did not call a technical on Close and Pearl when they were arguing at the scorer's table over time remaining on the clock in OT. Johnny said, " I don't care what it is, that's a technical foul."

That was a dinger, Coach.
