I've always been a fan of fun cars to drive. I like acceleration and handling over most other qualities. Fuel efficiency hasn't been something that attracted me to a car before. However, the new Jetta TDI with the low emissions diesel is something that is appealing. I've always liked the Jetta. And with the diesel, you get loads of torque despite low HP. I think it could be a fun, practical car that gets 45 mpg. I've heard other reports saying 50-55 mpg is possible.

Definitely something to look at.

Popular Mechanics article too that indicates 50 mpg in mixed city and highway.

I have an 06 VW GTI.

Before the GTI I had purchased 10 Japanese vehicles in a row. I was worried that I'd lose that Japanese reliability but I an honestly say that I haven't had one problem. The interior is as tight and rattle free as my wifes 05 Honda Accord. The only downside is that since it's turbocharged it requires premium fuel but it does get about 28mpg while being decently quick.

The only downside is that I don't know what resale will be like when I trade it in. The Honda's have always held their value.

Awesome!

I've been trying to pick up a used 2004 TDI. Hopefully some present TDI owners will be upgrading and dumping some more used ones on the market, so that the price of the used ones comes down into my price range.

I think I'm getting one of these things. Assuming the tank is 12 gallons. That would be 600 highway miles on a tank for about $40 with today's pricing. Or about 6.6 cents per mile. Our Honda pilot gets about 400 miles from a tank and it cost about $56 to fill. Or about 14 cents per mile.

236 ft-lbs torque is sweet as well.

The Bluetec things scares me a little. Mercedes just had a recall on some of the Bluetec diesels.

I have two more years before I replace my car. The pilot will be paid for then. The WRX will be 6 years old.

I was thinking about a Mazdaspeed 3. But now I'm thinking the Jetta TDI instead. It'll have been in the US for a year by then. I'm hoping all problems with Bluetec are resolved by the second year.

My ma has a 2006 Special Edition Jetta. The S.E. is VW's way of getting around 07 emission standards. She gets 42mpg's. They had an 06 used with 30k miles for sale for more than her sticker with the same options.
