That’s an overstatement.
Lard may be a better post against certain teams, which generally are not ones that plays four guards with the forward often involved outside the lane. Sure he changes the defense with rim protection, but he is also still a liability on screens and general team defenses.
Lard is at his best with a guy like Young doing a lot of dirty work, and his mistakes last year were somewhat masked by playing on a bad team. I don’t think we’ll need him to have a chance at KU, although being at full strength always helps. If Jacobson has an off night or gets in foul trouble, we’ll need Lard’s fouls to go with Conditt.
