Jacobson was a giant difference maker

I often end up listening to games on sirius radio on my west coast commute then watch the replay later. I listened to most of the game with Tech's home announcers and man, they are 100x the homers Walters/Heft are. I'd say half of our made baskets were traveling by their call, and we lived at the free throw line where Tech couldn't get a foul call, nevermind Tech got called for less fouls and only shot less free throws because they missed the front of almost every one and one you possibly could take.

One of the announcers WENT BALLISTIC that Haliburton did the raise the roof arms after he lobbed the dunk to Conditt.
As a sort of parallel, whenever I've read any game threads for other teams, the whining is the same as CF whining - bad reffing, bad announcers and bad coaching. It's always the same and the over-reactions are present. We were very fortunate on some calls / non-calls -- a Jacobson travel for a bucket, Shayok's travel around mid-court with about 17 seconds left.

He tried 2 3-ptrs and stopped after he missed both. Good game from him, helped TT doesn't have any size at the 5. Need Lard to get healthy quickly to have a chance at KU.

Lard played 9 minutes against KU and had two fouls. Without Doke, KU doesn’t have anymore size than TT. Since they often play with four guards and use Lawson on screens, it’s not a game well-suited for Lard.

To say we need Lard to have a chance is underselling how good the team is without him. Having depth is always good though, so I hope he’s available.

Lard's the best post on the team. The defense changes when he's in there because Jacobsen has zero effectiveness as a rim protector and we aren't that good and preventing dribble penetration. To Jacobsen's credit, he doesn't even try to protect the rim. He immediately goes to work at boxing out.

Mike isn't a shot blocker but he really worked hard and made life difficult for Kansas trying to get the ball into the block.
Last year Cam got eaten alive on the high-low Kansas stuff. I was like that old lady that yells rebound. I was yelling for him to keep it parked on the block and to not get drawn out 10 feet.

I agree regarding Mike. That was Cam from last year though. Hasn't had a lot of court time since then to improve, and obviously isn't a guy you can switch screens with, but he can hold his position down low at least, and bother shots. All else being equal, I'd much rather have Cam available than not.

That’s an overstatement. He has the potential to be, but isn’t there yet.

Lard may be a better post against certain teams, which generally are not ones that plays four guards with the forward often involved outside the lane. Sure he changes the defense with rim protection, but he is also still a liability on screens and general team defenses.

Lard is at his best with a guy like Young doing a lot of dirty work, and his mistakes last year were somewhat masked by playing on a bad team. I don’t think we’ll need him to have a chance at KU, although being at full strength always helps. If Jacobson has an off night or gets in foul trouble, we’ll need his fouls to go with Conditt.

I think a lot of people see a travel with Jacobson when one is not there. The dude will plant a pivot foot and take 5 or 6 steps with his other foot and with each step more and more in the hostile crowd will be screaming for a travel call but if that plant foot doesn't move it doesn't matter. He is really good at making something out of nothing with that as well.

He's not any more of a liability there than Jacobsen is inside the lane or in help defense down low. That's not to mention offensively where Lard can run the floor but he also passes incredibly well. For all the **** Lard gets, a lot of it deserved, he's really good at knowing what to do with the ball a lot of the time.

If I am thinking of the right play I actually thought he got away with a travel and then watched the replay. It was not. It looked strange because he used the opposite foot as the pivot foot. Niang used to get away with more travels than any Cyclone I remember.

Lard is talented, but to definitively say he’s the best post is overvaluing his current play, largely due to blocks. There’s a reason why he only got 9 minutes against KU and their 4 guard lineup. His defense is only superior in one regard, which is mitigated against a lot of teams, and his liabilities consistently exploited. Lard can run the floor, but doesn’t always.

Jacobson’s fight for rebounds, especially in the 2nd half vs Tech, was great to see. Love that quote about how’s Prohm challenges him to rebound better after the previous game and he responded. That’s exactly what we need out of him.

I wish he’d shoot the ball up quicker sometimes tho- seems like he often will get the ball and bend down and wait for guys to react instead of taking the ball up quick while he’s open. Niang was great at that.

Just because he helps our rim protection doesn't make him the best post on the team. Defensively, Jacobson really works to deny post entry. Offensively, he has some moves around the basket and gives us adequate scoring most games. Hopefully we get to see it soon, but Lard doesn't seem to have the 8 ft. shot down or a variety of moves around the basket. We need a threat down there to help score and/or free up our perimeter. LOL-guess we just want to clone MJ's skill in Lards body.

He’s been pretty great this season. I wasn’t expecting like anything from him before the season started.
Honestly I want to know why. Just as a rebounder I knew he would be very good. He was a good rebounder in the Big 10. Considering that is a more physical conference was it that hard to think he would be a good rebounder this season?
