    UConn had an inconsistent season but was playing out of their minds at that point.

    Michigan State was a #4 seed but ranked #8 nationally on Barttorvik, so they should have been more like a #2 seed based on the computer rankings/efficiencies.

    And that is in New York -- before you hit the Final Four.

    Efficiency rankings...

    #3 = Florida
    #5 = Wisconsin
    #14 = Connecticut
    #22 = Kentucky
    #25 = Iowa State

    We would have had our work cut out for us, to say the least.

    People like to say we were on some magnificent hot streak close to the end of the season, but the computer efficiency ratings disagree. They say we were playing well, but the 2017 team and the 2019 teams were playing better on a game-to-game basis and played better in Kansas City than the Kane-Ejim team did towards the end of the season. The K-E team avoided an injured Embiid, too, and the Big 12 was much better in 2017 and a little better in 2019.

    We just have this fuzzy glow around that team because they went undefeated against a relatively weak non-con (save for home wins against good Michigan and Iowa teams), pulled a lot of close games out of their butts, had some neat "stories" that went with them, and there was a sense of finally having "arrived" that went with that season. Playing so well when we had so little for expectations for that season was always going to be fun.

    The 2016 team was probably better, for instance, but does it have as many cool memories as the ball off Woodbury's back, Johnny in Hilton again, the three OT game in Stillwater, Naz's improbable shot to close the season in Hilton? That season also had absolutely stratospheric expectations on it, which gave it a frustrating edge the 2014 season did not have.

    The link Sig posted doesn't have the Chaminade game so technically they started off 1-8 but Chaminade is DII.

    If they were Division II and that game was played today, it counts as an exhibition. Were the rules different back then or were they not Division II in the early 1990s?

    It is not like we count a win over Viterbo College to start a season in the standings now.

    Well it was part of an exempt tournament so I am not sure how it was counted at the time.

    It still counts as a regular game. There are specific "schools" that are on the NCAA's no-go list, but for the most part a game against a D2, D3, or NAIA school can count on the D1 school's record.

    NCAA STATISTICS – COUNTABLE OPPONENTS
    For games to be considered countable for statistics (including rankings and records), the following must be true:

    • The institution must be a four-year, degree-granting institution and must compete as a four-year, degree-granting institution.
    • The opponent must be considered a varsity intercollegiate team as defined by NCAA bylaw 17 and must be considered countable competition as defined by NCAA bylaws 31.3.3.1 (Divisions I and II) and 31.3.4.1.1 (Division III).
    • The institution must satisfy one of the following:
    ○ Is an active, provisional or reclassifying member of the NCAA;
    ○ Is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States;
    > Middle States Commission on Higher Education
    > New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
    > North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission
    > Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
    > Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges
    > Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior College and University Commission
    ○ If the institution is located in Canada, it must satisfy one of the following:
    > Is a member of the Universities Canada;
    > Is a member of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association; or
    > Is a member of U Sports.
    ○ Is an active or associate member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics; or
    ○ Is an active or provisional member of the National Christian College Athletic Association

    Looks high relative to this...

    upload_2019-10-15_20-1-11.png

    Man, Florida might be a Death Star. The SEC actually has a few good teams besides KY.

    Then again, BT does not like us next year...

    We have a 41% chance to win that game (in Auburn) right now.
