Responsible journalists + DSM Rag = Pipe dream

Exactly. It seems even I am a journalist in today's newspaper industry.

I would love to experiment with various threads to see how far a newspaper would go in reporting message board fodder. Probably wouldn't go over so well with the mod team though.

I'm referring to the Des Moines tabloid running a story identifying an ISU athlete based on nothing more then internet messages and confirmation of a possible event by the athletic department.

Responsible journalists would have held this persons name from the public until there was something more concrete to report.

Let's try this again. They ran a story around an on the record quote from the Iowa State Athletic Department. There was no speculation about the incident or his role in it. It was an acknowledgement of the comments by ISU. The Iowa State Athletic Department was the one who didn't withhold his name until the details were in place. If you have a gripe it's with them, not the Register. When a football player is being investigated for an "incident" and this is confirmed by the Athletic Department, it's news for the sports page and should be reported. Had they run the story before acknowledgement from the athletic department than you would have a real issue. I know it's hip these days to claim media bias in every situation but give me a break.

Don't ever make me defend their complacent sports department again. I'm still waiting for them to report anything of value on conference realignment. Do they not have any sources?

I would like to know what CW has heard too.

I have heard all sorts of stuff. Some damaging, some not at all. I am taking the wait and see approach with this one. The Register is all over this story and will cover it in a responsible manner, with real sources, quotes etc. Iowa State has to know that the media is sniffing around and the truth will eventually come out, hopefully soon. I don't want to sling mud all over this thing and toss rumors out there that I am unsure about, hence my silence on the issue. Just being honest.

Just saying you need to look at the number of reports and timing. Yes, I know they are the same company. I question why the Rag didn't cover it as well as their sister paper.

Did you know the Iowa City Press Citizen is based out of Iowa City, the same city where the U of Iowa is located?

The other party needs to take the bullet on this one. He has to do whats right for us fans. Well that is what I want anyway.

This poses an interesting question. Lets say you, an above average Iowa State fan, are walking home one night when an important Iowa State player punches you in the face and takes your wallet. You realize that reporting the incident would result in a substantial suspension or that player being kicked off the team. What do you do?

Ahhhhhhhhhhh..... this is so refreshing. The RESPONSIBLE approach. Maybe someday you will get the job of being the editor of the Rag and turn it into an actual credible news source. Until then it will continue it's main uses as fire kindling, poop catcher at the bottom of pet's cages, etc....

Good job CW.

I get mad... almost call the cops. Settle down because I realize the situation a little. Then I cancel all my credit cards. Then I go down to the athletic dept. the next day and talk with CPR. I'll bet I get my wallet back from him....

Too bad a lot of others didn't take this approach.

They made a movie about that very scenario.

I really can't believe these guys can be who they are and make such stupid choices. I'll never understand how you can get a free ride scholarship and be a starting player and then go out a make a stupid, idiotic choice that jeopardizes your status with your team and your possible professional future.

Duh!!!!

I agree. We had our own time with Dom Douglas, et all but since they all left its all better. (except for the occasional drinking incident.)

You and I are going to have to agree to disagree. This has nothing to do with media bias. It has to do with responsible journalism versus tabloid journalism. You and I obviously have different opinions regarding the difference.

Didn't realize that is what this was about. The movie any good? Whats the general plot?

To be honest, I havent seen it. ha.
But I've been told all about it. I was told it is good, but kind of dark. The lonely world of a super obsessed fan I guess. I wont spoil it, but he has to figure out what to do after being beat up by his favorite player.

I agree with you. There would be no harm in waiting a few days until the details of whatever he did comes out. It's ridiculous to publish a report that the University is looking into something where the end result may be bad or may be complete exoneration. Wait, find the facts, right an article would seem to be the common journalism scheme. Instead, it seems like the Rag prefers to find a fact, report a fact, and let others make unsubstantiated generalizations based on shotty reporting.
