There's nothing minor about OWI. I understand that almost all of the companies I've known refuse to hire prospective hires with OWI history and if they do, there must be an extremely strong rationale to hire this candidate. It doesn't usually happen, though.

It may have some significant punishment, but any crime that nearly everyone most normal people know has committed at least a couple times in life, is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. Obviously it deserves a one-game suspension of course and that seems to be the standard punishment.

Wow, that is awful. Try telling someone who's had a loved one killed or injured by a drunk driver that its not a serious crime. Oh, and I consider myself "normal", and have never driven drunk.

It's hard to tell if it comes down to a trial. A guy could luck out and be walk away like Sam Mack or he could end up with a Hawk Fan judge like Berryman did. I'm not sure if I agree with the outcomes of either of these cases based on the information that was made public.

Dude, are you seriously implying that Berryman didn't deserve what he got? :biglaugh: He slapped around some frat boys, and got kicked off the squad for stealing 4 bucks and a cell phone. An iowa fan judge didn't happen to Berryman, Berryman happened to Berryman, dude was a complete knuckle dragger.

Thinking out loud here (and hoping at the same time..)

Is it not possible that the video of the stolen card being used is video of Sims' roommate? If so the police would have had reason to search his roommates place of residence, but in order to do so they would have HAD TO listed Sims on the search warrant as they share the same address.

Anyone with better knowledge of the legal system that can verify this thought process?

God I hope I'm right...

Hate to break it to you buy his roommate is his girlfriend. I am 100% sure because I have met her. Don't tell me how this is a message board and I am blowing smoke. That is a fact that you can take to the bank.

This is correct.

They don't even check anymore, use my wife's cards all the time, have never been asked even once in 4 years. People are really bad at checking at doing their jobs these days.

When I was a kid my mom would send me in with her credit card to pay for gas and I would sign her name. I can see how it could go unchecked. Let's hope that she was the one using it, he was just with her and "had no idea it was stolen."

Just like boy genius Adrian Clayborn. And Sam Aeillo. And all the other scholar-athletes that have gone through kirk's rogue program. At least ISU didn't postpone Berryman's trial until after the season. And ultimately did the right thing when he showed he couldn't keep himself out of trouble.

When have the squawks ever done the right thing when it wasn't forced upon them d-bag?

No question that some jail time was appropriate. The length of the sentence and the fact that the request for an early release fell on deaf ears was a head scratcher compared to how others with longer rap sheets are typically dealt with.

This should be a cut & dried case of guilt or innocence.

Either he has the ill-gotten stuff @ his residence and he is in surveillance video purchasing said booty or he's not in video and/or does not have anything on evidence list.

About as simple as that.

I did a case search on Iowa Courts Online...who is the funkhouser listed?

Just sounds like the search warrant was executed yesterday

ISU runs the courts these days?

That's a good point. It's a whole new world of credit card usage. Using someone else's card might not be that difficult.

But what about the part when you sign the little electronic thing? How does a guy pull that off with a woman's name on the card?

The original blog this ran on doesn't exist anymore, so this is the best repost I could find.

Warning, borderline NSFW (no pictures).

We better do a good cover up job on this. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like a squawk style coverup was in the makings. Only that the 'victim' wasn't nearly as interested in sweeping this under the rug, or as interested as our coaches were.

Memo to those who think this only happens in Iowa City. Coaches look out for their players at every school, and every school has players that get into trouble.......

I've always put "Check Photo ID" on mine.

But I had a retailer once tell me that isn't supposed to be acceptable. Seems much more secure to me, but......

I do that with all my cards and so far no one has said anything like that. A year ago about one in three would actually ask for a photo ID, now.....about one in twenty.

The bolded should have earned him All-American honors and a lifetime get out of jail free card.
