That will leave 3 teams remaining in the bigXII that wrestle. Do recruits even want to come wrestle for that conference?

There are only 3 mens swimming teams in the Big 12 currently.

Good question, but the fact of the matter is, they'll still wrestle against the best teams out there. Plus, they would still probably want to wrestle for the staff.

    Yes they would.

I'd guess we'd still schedule those schools anyway. The only difference would be the conference tournament.

IMO, the Big XII needs to look at adding some wrestling only members.

Even if they could get to eight teams, they would be far better off.

I think as long as we still wrestle the top teams in the country the program will be fine.

Some sports don't matter if they are in a conferance. Wrestling is one of them. Different dynamics than basketball and football.

Over the past few years there has always been talk about creating a wrestling only conference. With Nu and MU leaving that may prompt the move. There are a lot of teams out there that still have wrestling teams. I would think a league like this would work,

    ISU
    OU
    OSU
    UNI
    BYU
    Boise State
    Ohio
    Northern Illinois
    Marquette
    Air Force
    Wyoming

Right now, there isn't that much in the terms of powerhouses, but wrestling is the kind of sport that if you wrestle in a good named league you can build a program pretty quick.

If they both leave, wrestling will be dropped as a conference sport and since I believe we are now at the minimum number of conference sports we would be forced to add another. My concern would be if there is enough money for both a new sport and to keep wrestling. I would hope so but you never know. Back when Cael left one of the reasons I floated was that he couldn't get a guarantee that wrestling would be maintained if the Big 12 dropped it.

Another reason for the Big 10 to go to 16 and take ISU.

bring wrestling and develop a hockey program!

I highly doubt it. OU/OSU/ISU account for 60% of the national championships of the sport. Without Nebraska and Missouri they account for the same exact number.

Why does it even have to be the "Big 12"? If that happened (I don't think it will), we could put together a new conference for wresting-only. Other schools do this, have a conference just for a particular sport, or be independent for just a particular sport. Nebr.-Omaha is in a conference just for hockey, another for everything else. Notre Dame is in the Big East for everything but football. Etc.

I doubt the conference affiliation matters when you are routinely a top 5 program in the country.

I'm sure we'd find a conference. Maybe the big 10 will let us join the conference as a wrestling member and the big 10 can be the top dog in college wrestling.
