Actually I think the Ames to Kelley stretch is closed for road construction this summer.
correct, you have to cut through Kelly and take a dirt road that goes by the rodeo, which I am guessing has a chance of being covered by water

Why is 35 closed? Where is the water specifically? Just south of Ames?

Wow! Talk about taking the long way around!I live east of Story City. Tried to scoot to Gilbert and head to west Ames via E18 and Hwy 60 this morning. Where E18 crosses Hwy 69 (about a mile south of Story City) traffic was backed up 2 miles, waiting to do that left turn. I did not wait. I turned around and got back on I-25 to head to Ankeny... just in time for I-35 to be closed.
Yep, I made it home and am staying there.
