We're never going to spend the thousands of dollars to have a one off special helmet again now that we have to budget player salaries. Hope I'm wrong but also I wouldn't want the program to spend money on something like that anyways. Put it to nil.

Now if we added a "gold" helmet to the regular rotation that'd be cool.
Great point. All of that adds up real quick. What's a helmet....like $400-500....times 103 roster spots.....chunk of change.

Is definitely adds up but then I see MAC teams or CUSA teams roll out 6 different helmets and it makes me pause and think…well how can they do it?

Nothing positive to say except I like that "Cyclones" is taking over.

I've never liked "I-State."

We're not "I-State" like "K-State." Never were. Never will be. We're "ISU."

Nothing specific about the logo to Cyclones, Iowa State, or even the state of Iowa generally outside of the block "I" in the background. It looks like a create-a-team logo (and not a good one).

Spelling out "STATE" is just cringeworthy. Logos are not supposed to spell out words!

So... we've got that one goin' for us.

Although I have been critical of our overuse of black-white combos, that is probably the least "worst" on that list, viewed in a vacuum. I could have voted for any of the others (I chose the Lions black alt ... yikes).
Agreed. Definitely on the less offensive end of things.

I personally voted for the Packers' Icy Whites purely because the helmet stripes are GWG while every other part of the uniform they're GYG.

Gross. The deep love of black uniforms is just … I dunno. Like they say, the players like em, I guess, but …

Agree.

"Players like them" is common refrain, and I imagine it's true, although I don't know if there's official documentation.

I tend to assume players would embrace ANY kind of uniform design, alternate, whatever. Not limited to ISU, but anywhere.

Every reveal video I've seen when a new design is introduced, and team members responded enthusiastically. I don't recall a yawn-ish reaction.

I doubt we're winning recruits specifically because we have the black-out options.

[End of my "general" rant. For now. :)]

Athletics spent $4.5M last year on equipment across all sports. What’s another $50k?
A new shell for an entire team would be WAY more than $50k - there's a TON more that goes into a new helmet for a football player (at this level) than just ordering small, medium or large

This is why I say establishing a design "tradition" is so important, especially right now when football & the AD as whole is on an upward slope of achievement - create something timeless, that can be worn for decades with little change, that is instantly recognizable

Just a few tweaks to our current uniforms gives us a uniform that would rival any other red/gold team in the nation/NFL

I’m not usually one to say this, but I feel like we should probably wear our actual school colors for a bowl game that’s going to be viewed by a large audience.

Also getting somewhat tired of the cyclones script on the helmet being worn for every single game. Like the logo, but I like the I-State on the helmets too.

The white versions of this would have been perfect for the bowl game.

So even at a $1k per helmet that’s still $100k, obviously still a lot. And it’s not like they would have to rescan players heads. They would already have their measurements.

They did it for the Liberty bowl in ‘17, only used those helmets for 1 game.
