Not saying Iowa as a whole will be better this year than WSU was last year but I think Iowa's defense will be better than WSU's was last year for sure.

Yeah but you never know on jitters, that's what I'm saying. It was a huge bowl game.
Wazzu's D has gotten better with Tracy Claeys.

Something impressive with Purdy is he seems to play with a clean slate. Had some rough starts at times last year but went on to have nice games.

Agree with this. Their D was not a typical D you see from a Mike Leech squad.

    You again.

So CMC will never recruit better talent than he has now?

It will be disappointing if we don't see improvement in the O-line this year but I don't expect this is the best O-line CMC will have at ISU.

But that is just me being a homer.

There's sort of a Baker Mayfield feel to Brock Purdy and I know that's sort of / kind of a ridiculous thing to say. But watching the plays he made by himself and then the ability to sit back in the pocket and throw dimes is enlightening. He brings a level of excitement at the QB position that we truly have not seen since Seneca Wallace. The difference is Purdy has a much better team than Seneca did behind him.

    Slight to Iowa.

I fully expect all Iowa fans here to agree with me and all ISU fans to disagree with me on this one.

I agree with you. Hard to argue with 5 in a row when the last couple of years the talent gap has closed.

I think you have to look at this by matchup. No pushes allowed. My post my rules.

Iowa run defense against ISU running game. You have to give an edge here to Iowa. Maybe the biggest edge of all the matchups either way. Even with Montgomery the Clones did nothing in the ground. Advantage Iowa

Iowa pass defense against ISU pass offense. Iowa will have a decent pass rush but don’t have the depth they had last year. Purdy will get his and I think he will throw for over 250. Iowa needs to keep his yards between the 20s and limit splash plays. Advantage ISU

Iowa State run defense against Iowa run offense. Iowa has to be better here, but ISU has probably the 2nd beat rush defense the Hawks will see this year (Michigan who lost a bunch but has some amazing players as backups). The key stat of the game will be here. If Iowa can average 3.5 per rush, they win. I don’t think they will. Nearly as big of an advantage as the opposite matchup. Advantage ISU

ISU pass defense against Iowa pass offense. As a Hawk homer, I really believe you’ll see the receivers for Iowa step up. The Iowa OL does well against a pass rush and Stanley matches Purdy and throws for 250. I think Iowa will make a conscious effort to try and beat ISU down the field for big gains. Advantage Iowa

Special teams. The only real advantages I see here is that Iowa has Smith-Marsette as a returner and ISU doesn’t. I’ll give an advantage to Iowa here, although admittedly I don’t know much about the ISU specialists, other than their punter is hurt and Iowa got a grad transfer who seems to be pretty good. Advantage Iowa.

Neither team will be able to run the ball effectively. I think you’ll see the teams move between the 20s easily but stall in the red zone. ISU punches in more touchdowns, Win by 7-10

To me, this mostly comes down to the ISU OL. If ISU can grind out 100 yards+ in the run game, they win by 7-10. If they can't, and Iowa's DL is allowed to tee off on Purdy, then iowa probably wins a close one. I think that iowa will be methodical enough to put up a few points on ISU's D. Not a lot, but maybe 17 or so. ISU will be able to score more than that if they can keep the hawk D honest. If not, it will be something like a 17-10 L.

My hope is that with Manning back, all 5 OL starters returning and iowa taking a minor step back on their interior DL, ISU can run it well enough to grind out a win. As always, with two similarly talented teams, it probably comes down to turnovers...and ISU is due for some lucky bounces there.
