Troll free zone. Legit thoughts on this year's game? I'll be interested in what Campbell does to prep for Epenesa. I could see a lot of formations with Chase Allen to chip/block, short outs and quick hits to RB coming out of the backfield on the opposite side, and QB draws. Also will be interested to see if we use more zone or gap blocking schemes in the run game. I think DCs have figured out how to defend our zone blocking and hope we go more man-for-man off the line. But Lima eats up a lot of space and isn't easily moved.

I think Campbell runs at Ep quite a bit. Wear him down on some stretch plays to see how he handles a full game. Pass rusher can look better only playing likely pass plays. Not knocking him, but he was not an every down player and none of us know how he will hold up in that situation.

Isn't one of the parts Epenesa struggles some with is against the run? That's what sports talk makes it seem like anyways. If that's the case, agree with a previous poster that we should run early and often his direction to try and tire him out some. If our line is struggling, try to play away from the inside; QB options, swing passes to receivers. Having a mobile QB should help us out in that regard.

Defensively, I'm not too concerned. Not that I think Iowa's offense is bad, I just really like our defense. Maybe run some more 4 man fronts than normal? I'll be betting the under on this game.

It will be a great game but I just don’t see how CMC drops this one again.

Epenesa has struggled against the run, but he was also a true freshman and sophomore. He's going to be a very dominant DE this year in all facets.

We absolutely need to help on him with our TEs and we have 3 very capable guys. I worry about him 1 on 1 vs Meeker or Good Jones. Our young RBs might be a liability yet in pass pro so we might see more of Croney in this game IMO. (That's just a WAG).

Defensively, Iowa is built to give our defense some troubles. We thrive against impatient Big 12 offenses but Iowa never feels pressure to be impatient. Last year was a perfect example... dink and dunk all game with no real effort to get to the end zone... eventually we wore down and lost the field position game brutally. They just waited for us to screw up and we gave them ample opportunities. Our defense will be fine in this year's game. We just can't turn the ball over, shank punts, miss kicks, and do NOTHING offensively.

This game will be a slugfest and I'm really excited to watch it unfold. Hopefully both teams ranked top 20!

This is a game where Manning is going to have to earn his keep, and I think he will. Last year ISU never adjusted to the slight changes Iowa did on the defensive side. The OL was lost most of the game too. With 5 returning starters that has to be much better. Epenesa is awesome, but ISU can limit his effectiveness by staying out of obvious passing situations. Fully expect that this game will be a lot like last year, very defensive. ISU will be better prepared this year with a better QB. DM being hurt and not having a first game last year really took a lot of the rhythm from the offense.

I just want a good, clean, fun game -- like the one in Ames two years ago.

Did not like the outcome, but man that game was a classic.

I've seen that written but don't really know where it comes from or what it's based on. He was one of the best the B1G in tackles for loss without playing full time. Scouts seem to think his defense against the run is good. But we haven't seen what he does when he's an every play guy and the focal point of the opposing team's blocking scheme so who knows.

There is just not much separation between the two programs now. Each gets there a different way but this is going to be another game that rides on 2-3 plays determining the outcome.

Last year it was 2 punts, if you can call them that. 13 and 14 yards, 27 yards on 2 punts when you should get 75 after return.

Don't look now but we just got dinged at punter.

If ISU loses, it will likely be in the kicking game.

Good thing we won't have to punt.... (and no, this is not even close to trolling....)

I've been wondering, is this the biggest coin flip game in series history?

Agree on Epenesa. It wasn't so much he was bad against the run, but he wasn't as good as Nelson or Hesse vs the run. Most DEs that are good against the run are upper classmen. He's going to be good against the run. Kids a beast and is a worker. Best bet against Iowa is to try to take advantage of their stubbornness in getting out of their base D. Easier said than done as they know teams try to do that. They also make you stay patient and drive in 3-6 yard chunks and see if you'll shoot yourself in the foot. Hopefully Purdy doesn't get impatient and is willing to check to the RBs.
    Should be a great game.

I think it'll be a close game. Both teams will struggle to run the ball and ultimately Iowa comes out on top due to preparation and a big play

This. The hallmark of our D is that we'll let you dink and dunk up and down the field in short chunks all day long. This is why Fitz has had so much success against us. He's one of the few coaches who doesn't get impatient, doesn't get greedy, and takes those 6-yard crossing routes all day long. We're not as bad as we used to be with the shift to a 4-2-5 as our base with a safety/LB hybrid, but it's definitely still a thing. If Purdy just takes what our D gives him consistently and doesn't get greedy or try forcing big plays that'll be key.

Yeah, outside of when you play us, I don't watch much Iowa so I'm not really sure; I've just heard talking heads discuss that. We will probably use a lot of 2 tight end sets I would imagine.

I'll take Purdy and our four All-Big12 defensive players in this one. We win 24-17.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us switch to a traditional 4-3 if Iowa decides to use double tights (they will). The good news is we have the depth and personnel to transition easy enough. Since they rarely run a hurry-up we can easily substitute back into the 3-3-5 for obvious passing situations.

On offense I’d like to see us open up the run with the pass. No slow developing plays & use our tight ends.
