I’ve worked the chains in high school football. Coaches and their staff are horrible. Dowling is really bad!!
They're good but after watching them start the game with 4 onside kicks in a row against Waterloo West I'm hoping they stomped by SEP.
USSSA Softball and Baseball would like a word. Holy smokes that's crazy town!
There's a lot of mob mentality with parents. IMO, if the coach is a yeller, the parents follow suit.
As far as a specific sport, I've heard horrible things said to refs and about opposing kids during, basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer, volleyball and wrestling.
I saw a LOT of soccer over the past 14 years and I've seen some total nutjobs in that time. I've been fortunate to have composed coaches with good parents. I couldn't deal with some of the psychotic parental sidelines that I've witnessed over the years. There were at least 3 games where myself and a few other "physically imposing" fathers positioned ourselves between the opposing parents in case things went sideways.
If you guys get the chance, watch Madrid and more specifically, their QB.
He's a fun watch
It's insane. We were lucky that neither of our daughters went all-in on sports after middle school, older daughter got into cheer (which could be considered a sport) and younger daughter was show choir and choir. But even what we saw when they played middle school/club volleyball was embarrassing. The absolute worst I saw wasn't even a parent, it was a set of grandparents from Johnston. Just by looking at them you'd think they were quiet, conservative, nice grandpa and grandma. But when they opened their mouths during the games it was absolute venom at the opposing team's girls and refs.
Clubs create that panic and competitiveness. Parents want what's best for our kids so we all fall for the high-pressure "your kid needs to start club sports now or they will be behind everyone and never fulfill their dreams" sales tactics. I feel like parents are at their worst in that 6-9 age range when they are told that their kid is the next superstar.

Correct, I do not think we should allow private schools with all their advantages to play against public schools. I am also a fan of cracking down on teams that should be playing 11 man, but are playing 8 man to win titles. You literally have schools with 45/50 kids out playing teams with 15, its wrong and should be changed.
I have stated before the fix is simple, do away with BEDS, use a schools actual roster size going back every four years to determine class and every private school should be playing a class above what their number indicates.
Because they are a private school. Poor little Remsen St. Mary's seems to find their way to the state tournament in several sports almost every year. And good for them. Private schools should just play up IMO. Xavier, Pella Christian etc.. All of them.

That would be my pick, my prediction is West Hancock and Saint Ansgar both cruise, don't have a feel for Pella vs LC and North Scott vs North Polk should be a good one.
What advantages did Remsen St Mary’s have that got them to the championship game?
I've umpired and officiated a lot.
You can literally see in club sports when parents realize that they've spent thousands of dollars just for their kid to either burn out or for them to realize they aren't going to play consistently at the high school level, let alone anyone paying for college for them.
We go through this same crap every year a couple of times, private schools have many advantages over public schools, and now with getting state funding that makes it even easier for them. St. Mary's should feel fine about all the success they have had in multiple sports, but they should also as a private school be moved up a class to even it up for the public schools that do not have the advantages that private schools do, instead of just counting BEDS and leaving it at that.
They magically fill their school with good athletes every year? I mean, whatever. More power too them if they can. They should just move up a class since they are private.
My kids did the USSSA baseball and loved it. I was under no delusion about getting a full ride in baseball for either of them. The rules are changing but if you were to take the thousands you spend on that super elite select travel perfect game team and stick that in a 529 you'd be way a head in the long run. Especially back when the scholarships were limited to like 11 in baseball.
What advantages got RSM to the title game?
And yes, we hear the same state funding whine every year from you during tournament time.
