"In the Game", or "Back in the Game"

The biggest lead I can remember us blowing off the top of my head is 12 points, and that was in the second half at Kansas in 2012. We also gave up a late 10-point lead at Oklahoma State in Fred's first year in 2010-11.

So in other words, "too many games that we lose after being up by 20" = 0?

Thought that might be the case.

2 years ago we blew a 20 point lead at home against WVU but won on a buzzer beater, and we let a 26 point lead narrow down to 6 @ WVU with 4 min left. Hoiball is a little susceptible to giving up big leads as easy as we gained the big lead.

Sorry, should have been more clear. Not that scrubs should be brought in at that point but if you get a big lead the goal should be to maintain that lead so you can bring in the scrubs with 2 min left. If you let the team outscore you the rest of the way so you can't get the scrubs in, then I define that as you let the other team back in the game.

Come on man... These are our players, not our 'scrubs'.

As far as the blowing the lead syndrome goes, in competition when one team gets a large lead its only human nature to let off the gas pedal a little bit. The game isn't out-of-reach until you clear the bench, and we all know how often that occurs.

If you're watching a lead evaporate...and you start getting edgy about it...or ****** off...they're back in the game.

Losing a lead != losing the game, though.

But if you needed a buzzer beater to win the game I'm pretty sure the other team was "in the game".

Most definitely. I was more responding for the guy who said he's seen too many games lost when we had had a 20 point lead. That's a completely inaccurate statement to make with Fred at the helm.

I love the posts lumping Iowa in with Arkansas.

Could they have come back to win? Sure, there's still time on the clock but that would also mean the team with the best offensive players, the best defensive players, and best rebounders would have chucked up a 25 point lead.

We're getting real close to Danny Mac "We won the second half" stuff.

Of course, I've actually seen "except for that 5 minute stretch the Halks outscored ISU by 9".

Despite coming back a little bit, it never seemed like Iowa had the momentum. When RKansas had cut the lead down to 11-13 for a few possessions and had the momentum it seemed to me like they were back in the game. The momentum seemed to really change when they had it down to 11 and got the defensive rebound. They had the ball for about one second then Bryce stepped in front of a guy as he was receiving the outlet pass forcing the travel. It seemed like they lost their momentum right there.

It would be cool to see a graph, based on actual game statistics, that has remaining time on the X-axis and deficit on Y-axis. On the Y-axis plot the probability of coming back from that deficit with that much time left in the game. At some point, as you get closer to the end of the game, there is no chance you can come back (e.g., 10-pt deficit with 1 second left).

Someone needs to do this.
