Far too many get a slap on the wrist and the punishments don't escalate fast enough with repeat offenders to deter the behavior. This country needs to get serious about drinking and driving. 1 - Stop normalizing the behavior. 2 - Punish the people who do it severely enough so that it doesn't happen again.
They escalate fairly quickly for repeats. By the 3rd offense it's a felony with a minimum 30 days in jail and you lose your license for 6 years. Some people just won't stop. I had to take a class when I was much younger due to an unfortunate choice in sleeping locations one night after the bar. One of the guys in that class was there due to his 7th OWI, outside of the chair or a life sentence you'll never make a guy like that stop.

I still see people doing it frequently. Feels nearly universal at times. Android Auto & CarPlay are great for what they are, but they aren't perfect for texting and don't let you browse Twitter/FB/Instagram/TikTok at all (and for good reason), so people are definitely still using their phones.

I do agree that it feels like there's less publicity about the issues with it, but that feels to me more like them giving up than declaring it a success. They were investing a lot of money enforcing something that has a relatively insignificant penalty, is probably somewhat difficult to prove in a lot of cases, and it feels sort of inevitable.

Not sure where you are located, but is there a “no touching” law? Or just a no texting law? We have a no touching law, it makes it super easy for cops to nab people and they do frequently. I thought they were running a speed trap one day but it was at a busy intersection and they would just walk out when the light turned red and ticket people that were on their phones.

Is this still a thing? CarPlay is like a universal feature now. I think there was a time where there was a gap, and every other radio ad or tv or billboard was “don’t text and drive”. Now I rarely see any mention of it.
You can't drive 1 mile without seeing drivers staring at their phone. As for billboards, you seem to be correct. It's like "Why bother?".

Georgia, which is a hands-free state. Doesn't seem to stop anyone around here. Any idea how mucht the ticket is for? Unless it's substantial I have a hard time imagining it's effective. People are absolutely addicted to their phone and a 5% chance (it's probably MUCH lower than that in actuality) someone gets caught and issued a $200 ticket isn't going to accomplish anything. The fact they set up traps for it probably points to it still being pretty rampant.

2 points and $150 for 1st offense; 3 points and $250 for 2nd offense. 4 points, 90 day suspension, $500 fine for 3rd offense.

12 points in any rolling two years is an automatic license suspension.

Yeah, that's not stopping anyone. Need to get caught 3 times before anything of significance happens and I'd wager the overwhelming majority of people will never get caught even once.

It's standard...get over it.
Shall we chat about Mike Gundy?

I get that it’s standard. I just thought that if you’re so drunk that you end up in someone’s yard, that’s a level beyond being over the limit when getting pulled over. But, I guess that’s on me for feeling OWI isn’t treated like the dangerous activity it is in this country.

To think that getting caught smoking weed in your apartment is the same punishment as OWI just baffles my mind.

As far as Mike Gundy, that comment should have been immediate dismissal with cause.

I don't disagree with anything you typed but, it is what it is, in D1 sports.

I would have to look around, but I think studies have shown that hands-free stuff is as bad (or almost as bad) as using your phone with your hands. It's the distraction that counts more than actually having one hand on the phone, or head down.

I have a friend that was one of those guys. It was either 6th or 7th OWI, ended up in a halfway house, lost license, etc. Wife said "you can have booze, or you can have me" and he quit drinking entirely. That was about 20 years ago now. Doing well now, looking to retire soon.

So people do sometimes stop, but it's depressingly rare. Something like 10% or less with a substance addiction are able to quit permanently iirc.

Insidious disease. Probably only disease that tells you aren't sick.

4 strikes and you're out.....seems very lenient.

Not exactly sure.

Well get an OWI every 10 years and 1 day from age 20 on and even at age 80 and a week you will still be considered to be first time offender even though that would be number 7. They drop off after 10 years for some dumb reason.
