Greg was in my office not too long ago...President and CEO of Northwest Mechanical, Inc out of Davenport. Seems like a good dude.
He was a player before my time, so I don't remember him as a player.

Actually he played at my school when I was in 6th grade for a senior tour. I called him on the phone to interview him for a project I did in class on ISU MBB (Orr also was kind enough to talk to a dumb 6th grade kid for several minutes on the phone for the project).
Anyway, Hester agreed to come to the school during the day on the day they were playing and came to my classroom to sign autographs. I had him sign my shoes...they might be the most valuable pair of all-white Voits on the planet :yes: He also hooked me up and let me sit behind the players bench during the game. Best decision for a project topic I ever made!

Greg Hester was a Cyclone legend, but I'm not sure I remember him actually getting on the floor after pregame warm ups.
I think he was actually the leading minutes played in a season 12th man we have had in ISU history. Or maybe I just remember all the Hester chants. Made a "Hester" sign in plastics class in jr. high in his honor. True Cyclone Legend.
Keith Murphy made Hester a legend during the games. He'd always start the "Hester Watch" when we'd get up big and chronicle how close Greg was to Johnny Orr as he moved down the bench.
As fans of ISU basketball, we used to chant for Hester at the end of games. He sat on or near the end of the bench, and if the score of the game was not in question, all of Hilton would start chanting Hester...Hester...HESTER. As it built in crescendo, Coach Orr used to try to ignore it. I remember Hester getting embarassed by it early in the season, then he played it up a bit later. When Orr finally gave in, called his number and Hester got up and started taking the sweats off, the crowd would go nuts. Just another in the great traditions in my memory of attending ISU basketball games.
I bet that guy could drink way more wine coolers than Hester.This Hester guy has similarities to this guy....
This is easily my favorite childhood memory in Hilton. It was one of the things that made me an Iowa State fan, and to this day I remember chanting Hester and cheering along with the crowd when he got in.
I can't say enough how much that type of thing molded me as a fan.
The only thing more nuts than that was the time he actually made a shot! The place was OUT OF CONTROL! That has to be some of Hilton at it's best!
I almost teared up reading this, this is probably my fondest memory of when I went to ISU.
