Grading the Players Thus Far

When I studied abroad in Rome at ISU I would read the sports page after every soccer game I watched and their coverage was grading each player pretty much exactly like this thread (it makes a lot of sense in soccer with less stats). It really helped me learn the language because I had watched each player in the game the day before and then the grading descriptions were very obviously describing what I had seen for each specific player.

Honestly I think every player played an A+ to A- at Ole Miss. Cam didn't play as many minutes as the other six but he was pretty great in what he played.

That might be the first "put it all together" game we've been waiting for. Possibly the one missing piece is rotating in Conditt if we play a team with a ton of size or a team that is killing us taking it to the hoop. I think most of us feel like @KU he should/could have helped if he wasn't sick.

In terms of shooting, we put it all together. We found some good shots against the Ole Miss defense, and made some others.

I think we can play better overall, but 70% shooting with only 8 three pointers is lethal

I have hard time to believe any body give Shayok lower than A. Does any body really expect a transfer with 9 PPG in Virginia become leading scorer in Big 12? I don't know how the B+ or A- comes from. Name last ISU player leading Big 12 conference score, I don't think many people can do it...Shayok did this season is much better than expectation..

I think every starter will get A or A-. The only regress players are LW and Lard...Young is incomplete

People need to stop acting like his 9 ppg were low/bad. For Virginia that was pretty dang good, he was the second leading scorer on the team! If you look at his per 40 he actually led the team there. Given more minutes and a team that plays significantly faster it would be unusual if he wasn't a fairly prolific scorer

All player grades were too high because people didn't take into account defense. If we are going to make a run at a Big 12 conference title and hope to make an NCAA Tournament run - we need to play better defense across the board. I wouldn't give anyone on the Clones better than a B for defense- so I don't see how anyone's overall grade can be better than B+. Defense and rebounding are critical elements of a players grade.

IMO we are getting ahead of ourselves after a solid win against Ole Miss. Ole Miss was horrible on D. The key for the Clones is if we can win grind-it-out games against tough defenses like WVU, TCU, OU. January might have been our mid-terms, February will be the finals that count for 70% of the final grade.

A indicator that we might be turning the corner on offense is the fact our offense ran from from inside out. About 70% of our shots were from 2- THT was great running the offense from the high post. He was a little out of control at times- but reminded me a lot of Georges. Uncanny in getting his shot and dishing to others.

Hopefully we can make the next steps on defense/rebounding.

Our defense is very good this year

Best in nearly 15 years, although it’s faltered in some critical moments. Although losing Young hurts, we have the personnel to be even better imo. Prohm made comments today about not having spent much time on Ole Miss and focusing on our defensive breakdowns.

Lard: C- Obviously getting suspended for 7 games wasn't a good start. As we saw yesterday, he has a lot of ability. That pass to Wigginton after a quick move to the baseline was awesome. He's a great weakside rim protector. If I were coaching against him, I'd be sure to throw it into his man a lot because he is not a good one-on-one defender. Leaves the floor on pump fakes way too easily, shows little discipline, and doesn't try to deter drives. But when he's able to play free safety, he changes the game for ISU.

Good analysis on Lard. I hope he turns out like my Chem 177 class, where every test I went up a letter grade! He seems to be on the trajectory.

We have the 24th best defense in the entire country. I never said we were elite like Michigan or Texas Tech but our defense is the definition of very good
That’s also with some of our best defenders not available, although Young is still out and the others struggling to see the court.
