Angie left me in charge of one of the Friday OT threads this week.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Anything especially fun, cool, impossible? How did your plan end up working out?

The first one I remember is wanting to be a firefighter. Never happened (probably the best for everyone), but I'm now an attorney and spend part of my days putting out different kinds of fires. So I guess it kind of worked out?

I, and about every other child of the Free Willy generation, wanted to be a marine biologist. As it turns out I'm not entirely clear if that is an actual profession.

I wanted to be a teacher because I thought it would be cool to write on the chalkboard all day. And I've just shown my age by saying chalkboard.

I am not a teacher. I work in insurance. Like a large percentage of people in the DSM area do.

Way up there
My mom loves to trot out an old preschool assignment where I apparently wanted to be Big Bird because he was tall and yellow. I'm about 6'3 so I'm tall-ish but as far as yellow....

The younger brother of one of my sister's good friends in high school claimed that he wanted to be a spare tire. He once locked himself in the trunk of their car to see what it was like.

I have not heard his name on any of those serial killer shows but I keep waiting.

Maybe that just means he's really good

The only one I really remember was Astronaut. It didn't last long. Pretty much spent my youth and school experience pre-ISU in the "I'm here now. Let's just get through this school year and figure all that out later" mode.

I grew up in a very blue-collar family. I remember vividly a conversation with one of my uncles where I told him my dream in life was to become a long haul truck driver. He quickly snapped back at me "don't do that, you'll never make any money!" I'm an engineer now and there are days where I think driving a truck sounds pretty good still.
