This became known as "the screaming chicken" in car circles. I think it might have been from the Smoky and the Bandit movie.
Your statement means no pickups, no suv, no crossovers, no older cars. It would be easy to say, give me the most expensive cars out there. So I will go with the best all around value. Luxury car- Lincoln MXZ Hybrid, drop dead beauty, luxury, safety, value and mpg. Sport car- Shelby mustang 1,000. Again drop dead beauty, 1,250 horsepower in race trim and best value on the face of the earth for the power. Econocar, very close, but Mazda 3. Very attractive and roomy, good price and 41 mpg. Family car, a lot of good ones. Probably depends on your own taste. Mine is a Lincoln Town car, highest owner loyalty rate of any car ever made. What is your ideal car from what's available on the market today, and why?

Mine is a 1970 Chevelle SS with a 454. It would be red with black stripes and a black top.
What I want (current market): Viper

A stick shift, because if it's stolen it will be stolen by someone who actually knows how to drive.
If we're sticking to cars currently on dealer lots, I'd probably go with a manual Passat TDI. Big enough to haul the whole family (three kids) minus the pets, TDI puts it over 40 mpg. I wish they still made the wagon version, I'd be all over that. I like the Jetta Sportwagon TDI, but the back seat isn't wide enough for a car seat and two booster seats...
