Two songs that bad covers have ruined-- "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac and "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show.

Put me down as another vote for "Take on Me" by Reel Big Fish being up there in my favorites.

One of my favorites:

After I heard it, I wanted to go get married again and use this as our first song...oh well, I'll just wait until my next marriage.
This was our first song.

I was driving home from my workout this morning and this song came up on my random playlist. I had forgotten how much I like this cover. It's such a different style from the original.

Good call. The original is a total turd/clunker and Cash (and Rick Rubin) really made it an incredible piece.

Some of mine:
"Atlantic City" The Band (Springsteen cover)
"Strutter" Drive-By Truckers (Kiss)
"Love in Vain" The Stones (Robert Johnson)
"Alison" Lydia Loveless (Elvis Costello)
"LA Freeway" Jerry Jeff Walker (Guy Clark)
"Honky Tonk Heroes" Waylon Jennings (Billy Joe Shaver)
"You Never Even Called Me By Name" David Allan Coe (Steve Goodman)
"Pressure Drop" Robert Palmer (Toots and the Maytals)

I saw this thread, not realizing it was old, and opened it to post this.

I'll add this to my list:

Bump!

If you dislike Kiss, this won't resonate. Otherwise — here’s an excellent cover.

“Deuce” (Kiss) by Redd Kross (1984):

And a live version, even more mind-blowing (it's obvious they listened to Kiss a lot and practiced the song over and over and over ...):

As a trumpet player and a jazz fan, it has to be Maynard Ferguson's cover of "Eli's Comin'". One of the songs that made me practice more. Ferguson hits notes that other trumpet players only dream of hitting. What a pair of chops.

Apologies if this was supposed to be for pop/rock music only.

Didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if this one is already covered.

Puddles Pity Party - "Pin Ball Wizard" sung to the tune of "Folsom Prison Blues." I suggest you go to Youtube and check it out, if you haven't.

Another would be Radiohead's version of "Nobody Does it Better."

Good call on Puddles Pity Party -I was going to just post that, or "All the Small Things" -which is great!

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes version of "Nobody Does it Better" is very good.

My favorite obscure one is, ahem, someone near and dear to me doing Piano Man on guitar in G

Agreed on Maynard. His version of "Gonna Fly Now" is killer.
