I was watching some old F1 races on YouTube recently and one of the most noticable differences between now and say 30 years ago is the reliability. It wasn't unusual for half the field to have some sort of mechanical problem. That in itself made the races more interesting. Eight seconds was considered a fast pitstop, and pitstop errors were common. Nowdays retirements are rare. Pitstops are 2 seconds. Add to that they have 3 qualifying sessions to determine the fastest car, no wonder there is no passing. It is easy to say get rid of the wings, or go back to steel brakes, but the good teams always find a way to be better than their rivals.
