Breitbach's in Balltown for a meal and looking over the river. (take the River road from Balltown north to Pikes Peak)

Pikes Peak State Park for river views and some light hiking.

Prairie Du Chien - Stark's, Cabela's, some shopping for the wife.

Gays Mills - Apple Orchards

La Crosse - fun place to stay for a night with good restaurants, hotels, bars

Lanesboro MN area - good bike trails if you like that. More bed and breakfast places to stay vs hotels.

I'm sure the Galena area is fun in the fall but I have never been there this time of year so can't say for sure.
Didn’t breitbachs burn down (twice?)?

Haven't seen it listed yet but the cassville ferry is sort of cool and quirky. $15/car/suv it kind of drops you out in the sticks on the Iowa side if I remember right. Also end up driving on some gravel on the Iowa side for a little ways if that bothers you.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 10-8

We just stayed at the Riverside Inn in Stillwater, MN this weekend. The leaves were lovely, should be even better in about a week.

I highly recommend the Agatha Christie room - it was a totally unique experience.

I will check that out. Kind of across the river is Hudson, WI. I love that little town.

I'd bet the area between Hudson and Eau Claire would be pretty great for all of this.

It's interesting anyway...up northish but also plenty of outcroppings.

Yep! And boats, motorcycles, etc to watch too.

One of my wife's favorite restaurants where we were in no rush to go anywhere is called San Pedro Cafe (in Hudson).

Yes, about 15 minutes away! The Rivertown might be more of a trip for just the two adults, but it has some cute little rooms. There are SO many AirBnBs and hotels in the area.

There are also a ton of little cute activities to do there. Apple orchard (with a good Thor cider, per Janny), candle making, lots of good food.

Think prairie is Chen has a cafe that does Porn in the Morn. Good way to get in the moods for fall foliage.

Fingers crossed cause that's about when we'll be there. Little far for OP but I bet LaCrosse Kickapoo area will be gorgeous. Probably a little early for Galena area.

The extra hour for the OP would be a game changer for him and his family. If he is willing to go 6, why not just go 7? SE Wisconsin would be nice, but NEW is another level, especially if they've never been.

Door county is much more than an hour from the Driftless Area.

The drive from Madison really isn't bad. After doing that long ass drive from dsm it will feel easy. And be pretty from the dbq to madison segment too.

Probably about a week later Pilot Knob east of forest city has all kinds of different trees with some nice hiking to do also. Nothing hard, but a little if everything
