That article was great news for Iowa State. I don’t know what people are complaining about. I mean, I’ve been around here awhile, so I know, but geez.

It's one dude being ridiculous. Of course it's a good thing and it's fantastic news to know the budget is coming along. Hilton needs a refresh. Some of those concrete steps are getting worn as heck.

Outside the flood plain issues, something likely not as easy or cheap to fix as some here are dismissing, I'm just skeptical that the entertainment district will actually do that well long term in the Hilton/Trice area.

reading this forum, i sometimes feel like it *10 years since historical floods, thats never happening again*

I mean, when you look at the design they had laid out, it looked clear they'd be moving some dirt to create platforms a little bit more elevated for whatever buildings would be there. While this area has flooded in the past, it hasnt been all that deep underwater, so it wouldnt take much.. The parking lots around them might flood, but that just means they'll be closed for a couple days every few years.

Pretty sure they make grills you can put on a tube or some kind of floating device. Consider the challenge accepted.

When you look at a map of ames, and look for open development land, there really isn't much of it except on the fringes. I think that's what some of this comes down to. ISU is sitting on a valuable piece of land right in the middle of Ames that could be turned into a revenue-generating location.

Compare, for example, the business district at prairie trail in Ankeny. That whole area is a similar size to this area. That's a lot of room for a lot of varied businesses. While it would be built with features that allow it to be a gameday hub, it would likely also be designed in such a way that it generates business the other 340 days a year there isnt a FB\MBB game in town.

I'll just put this out there. From a source I have, Toppling Goliath is being courted by ISU away from building in DSM.

That makes sense. That's the popular thing to do now; include a craft brewer surrounded by other retail. Cedar Rapids is doing something similar with Big Groove in the location of the never happened casino.

Yep. Waterloo has made SingleSpeed a huge part of their downtown renovation.

(Good) Breweries draw people to you town.

I am too, but if I'm being honest, the hotel will be just fine. It'll get plenty of stays because every opposing team will be staying there I'm sure since it'll be so close to the stadiums and stuff. Gamedays that place will be packed. You put TPG in there along with a few other businesses and it's just fine. One thing about that place, parking in Ames sucks a lot of the time, and parking will be no issue other than gamedays at this place.

Some opposing teams might use the hotel -- I could see VB, GYM, WR and maybe hoops. Definitely not football, though.

The hotel is a big step in enticing more events to Scheman, for the ~300 days that there aren't ISU games at JTS/Hilton. Conference/convention attendees want to be able to forget about transportation -- park the car and leave it. Interior walkway to/from the conference. Food/beverage across the street (instead of having to navigate Main St or S Duff).
