I feel like unless you're a bosa or something you need elite production to be a 1st round DE.
Some people were wondering if Epenesa would be able to do what he did last year while playing the entire game and so far he has yet to prove he can. If the season were to end today, it would be unlikely he'd be drafted where he was projected at the beginning of the year. The good thing for him is that there's still half the season left.

Many of the hok talking heads were putting over/unders on his SACK totals at FIFTEEN and being serious taking the over and saying things like “I see 17.5”. He might not even get 17 TACKLES in the regular season.

I honestly don't think he'd have double digit tackles all season if he had to play in the Big 12

It probably makes more sense if you spell flower "f-l-o-u-r".

Epenesa hasn't performed up to expectations as of yet. He has been getting washed out on running plays quite a bit and then when it is obvious passing downs hasn't been getting the consistent pressure he did last year. I'm guessing it is because he isn't as fresh as he was last year coming in on passing downs and not worrying about the run.

Having said all that, he still gets game planned around a lot and teams do seem to either double team or chip him with a RB or TE quite a bit. He has also still gotten his fair share of QB pressures, but his sacks are obviously down.

Iowa has still managed to have a pretty good defense thus far even with Epenesa playing below expectations and the secondary being really thin and green in spots. They will be tested this weekend with probably the best offensive team they have seen so far this year. They have passed every test thus far, but obviously this will be their toughest test.

Who's game planned around him? We didn't

Every great player is game planned around. I'm sure TCU said "take away Purdy's ability to run" however he still went out there and ran it all over them. Epenesa is going to get the other teams best every game and it's up to him to prove he can beat it. If he can't, he's not the player everyone said he was.

Iowa has never done overly well with their highest rated recruits. That staff can coach up and add athletic ability to the borderline 4 stars that want to improve .
Right. Their bread and butter is finding the modest recruits that have the drive to be great. Walkons included.

Iowa still get to play Northwestern, Purdue, and Illinois so AJ will have a chance to put up some big numbers in a few games. Those are 3 pretty bad teams.

Who's to blame? Ferentz? Doyle?

https://www.pff.com/news/draft-college-football-week-6-2020-nfl-draft-scouting-notes

WHERE’S THE DOMINANCE FROM EPENESA?
It was supposed to be a two-horse race at the edge position heading into this season, but after six weeks, there’s no more debate. Ohio State’s Chase Young is having an all-time start to his season while Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa is mired in mediocrity adjusting to his full-time role. While Young puts up single-game pass-rushing grades of 90.0-plus week in and week out, Epenesa has yet to even crack 80.0 in any of Iowa’s five games this season. While the Iowa defense doesn’t allow as much freedom as Ohio State’s to attack, a player with Epenesa’s physical tools should be dominating regardless. He had a higher pass-rushing grade as a true freshman (78.8) than he does currently (76.8). The season is still young, but Epenesa needs to show us that dominance again soon.

Rutgers, Miami OH, and MTSU aren't great either and he didn't play well in those games either.

He played great against Rutgers.

He was very disruptive against the Rutgers.

Really the only game so far that he's made a big impact on IMO with splash plays. Expected more of that to be honest, just hasn't been there.
