I have a silver maple that I would guess is about 30 years old. I had Family Tree Care come out a month or so ago to look at what I thought was oddly slow leaf development this spring. Turns out excessive seed production slowed leaf production this year, so no concerns there.

However, they indicated that the truck is starting to show some signs of rot in a few areas, and advised keeping a close eye on it. Worse, they said the tree will likely need to come down in 2-3 years.

I'm not disputing the diagnosis, but I'd like to get another opinion before cutting down a nice tree that provides a lot of shade. And I want someone that doesn't just want to make some money taking the tree down. Any recommendations for a trusted arborist in the Ankeny area would be appreciated.

Any pictures of the rot? How close is it to your house?

I believe all arborists have been caught committing arbor. Check with local authorities.

While it sucks to lose a tree, we have too many Maple trees. If you lose it, plant something more unique and less messy. Your neighbors gutters will thank you.

There isn't a lot that is super visible, at least to the untrained eye. There is a small hollow where a larger branch was pruned years ago. Otherwise, it's mostly some darker discoloration near the crotches at the main trunk.

Again, I'd like another professional to look at it, so any arborist recommendations would be appreciated.
