One great thing Fareway does is match competitor's ads automatically. Don't know of anyone else that does this.

Walmart has been laying off even more people lately so the six walton kids can be more than $26B each.

I assume this is a joke? I've never heard of Wal-Mart laying people off and even if they did I don't think it's called a lay-off when the employee is part time.

Too bad you are totally wrong Try thinking where the coolers and refrigeration equipment are located. If you think it is to make you walk and shop the store more, I feel sorry for you, you just don't understand how a grocery store has to be layed out.

You're trolling right?

HyVee was at the same situation back in the 60's with little manangement with degrees. Rich Jurgens, ISU grad and ..retired HyVee CEO was part of the big education push at HyVee. Dahl's never did the same as I recall.

Just to set the record straight, it was Ron Pearson who started the big change (Drake grad) and it is Ric Jurgens not Rich.

Read again. Key words: sans Sinnwell. As in he does have a degree - in pharmacy, albeit.

I agree that you don't need a degree to run a company, and I didn't specifically express that sentiment. But at some point you need to surround yourself with educated people to keep up with the Jones's. The good ol' boys and "yes men" appointed by Sinnwell by and large don't have that education. I don't know how that can be argued against as something that drives a large corporation forward - or in this instance, into the ground.

. The vast majority of the corporate landscape, sans Sinnwell, lacks a college education - which is astonishing for a major corporation, and makes it all the more surprising that Dahl's has stuck around for so long. What's worse, .

I read it, that is what you posted. Not Having a college education doesn't mean you are not qualified to be part of the management team. Its your work experience that makes you qualified or not at that level.

Had pool league last night and brought up this conversation to the Dahl's managers. They both confirmed that Dahl's as we know it will not be around much longer it's just a matter of when. They said from what they heard there are some potential buyers to take over some of the stores but as stated this is going to be a hard market to break into and that is probably keeping some of those from committing.

Yes but he is drinking from the fountain of great conspirices that grocery stores do things like milk at the back of the store just to make you walk more and shop more. If anything HyVee's new mega stores do that just with their sheer size. Fareway smaller size is much more appealing to in and out and gone shopping. One truism still is true, the longer you are in the store, the more you will ultimately buy

There's some truth in between the two extremes though. Of course coolers/freezers are placed more based on energy efficiency, equipment requirements, and ease of restocking, but you can't deny that grocery also set up endcaps and displays to push certain products and promote impulse buying (within reason). And that's not some big evil conspiracy, that's just smart optimization of your store.

I still vote Publics as the best grocery store in the US. Hy-Vee is alright, but Publics is the ****. Lucky for Hy-Vee they are only in the south east.

I stayed with some family last year in Winter Garden, FL for a few weeks and they shop primarily at Publix. I guess I'm not seeing what you see. It was OK, pretty comparable to HyVee, but I wouldn't say they were any better.

Yep, it was Pearson, he pulled his moves when Vredenburg was in Europe including moving the corporate headquarters.

I shop at dahl's about half the time because it's on the way, but all things being equal, Fareway is my favorite. Dahl's generic is awful. I buy poptarts as a snack in my lunch, theirs have the taste and texture of cardboard.

I'm concerned by the number of posters on here that have willingly tasted cardboard at some point in their lives. Applebees, Great Plains, Texas Roadhouse, and now Dahl's version of pop tarts have all been said to taste like cardboard.

When I was little, I used to chew on baseball cards, of course that tasted better than the "bubble gum" that came in a pack.

Green lighting, ceilings lower, feels less like a warehouse. It's subtle, but there.

Wegmans and Central Markets are much better than Publix.

Hipster detected, enjoy over paying for "organic" and craft beer and the smell of pretentiousness.

Never been to a Wegmans.

semi-sarcastic, cause you can get some unique **** at central market.

Wegmans is incredible. Imagine a hipster HyVee that is twice as large (as HyVee's largest) with a fresh food area (meat, deli, fish, bakery, etc) where you can also have them cook the food to order for you so you can just eat it there. Basically any food for sale in the store can be cooked and ate there.

Yeah but what do you know? You're only 1 true fan.
