I can always find what I need at Fareway. My produce doesn't spoil immediately like it does elsewhere (Hy-Vee). The hot sauce that my kid likes costs $3.34 less a bottle at Fareway than our Hy-Vee, I just find that absurd. And I am not made of money, can't shop at Dahl's. Sadly, I have to travel 20 miles each way to shop at Fareway and usually find that I still save tons of money over Hy-Vee, even accounting for gas mileage. I don't make the trip when the weather is bad. Went into Hy-Vee on Feb. 14 to buy a gallon of milk. I had to crawl on the floor and remove 17 gallons before I found one that did not expire on Feb. 15. Woman down the aisle was complaining because all of the sale yogurt had already expired. Other Hy-Vee stores have to be better than ours because they wouldn't be doing such booming business otherwise. They took away drive up groceries and never plow the lot, so I had to help a woman in her eighties who got her walker stuck in the snow last week trying to take out her groceries.

You must have a bad hy-vee because I've never heard of someone preferring Fareway produce to Hy-Vee. Most Hy-vee's do so much business that you don't even have to worry about items expiring.

What makes Cub popular in MN is getting to compete with Rainbow (it sucks) and Lunds/Byerly's (apparently feel they can gouge by having carpet in a grocery store?)

That's probably true. I was lucky to grow up in a town that was dominated by Coborn's, who were pretty good. Our ****** chain nobody shopped at was Econo Foods.

Speaking of grocery stores has anyone else seen the new WalMart commercial going after HyVee directly?

That's the first time I've seen WalMart go at regional companies before in ads.

I'm sure Wal Mart may be the cheapest for groceries but I just can't bring myself to doing it. Plus I would much rather support a company like Fareway or even HyVee.

Yes. And they went after them on price. Which is laughable. It's no secret that Walmart is cheaper. But there is a reason people go to Hy-Vee. It isn't because they beat Hy-Vee on Price. Silly to point out something everyone already knows.

I go to hy-vee for the atmosphere, and the Thelma's Ice Cream Sandwiches.

That is the main reason I go to Hy Vee, because their fresh produce is fresh. That is the biggest knock on Fareway is their fruits and veggies.

The first store in the metro that doubles coupons will have my business.
Yeah wtf is up with that, on Extreme Couponers every store seems to double coupons, I'd literally never heard of that until watching that show.

I've only used the Ames Dahl's about 6 times since it opened--two or three were on Sundays and one was to get Jimmy Buffet tickets for my parents at Ticketmaster. It seems to be a step-down from when Cub Foods was there. Gotta love when ther are live birds flying around your grocery store.

I've never been impressed with Hy Vee produce, I buy 99% of my groceries at Fareway. Even if it was slightly better (never been the case for me) why would I drive further and pay more money for the same thing I can get at Fareway?

The north Ames Fareway has a large selection, a much nicer store than the downtown one. I love the north Fareway, convenience and price wins for me.

I never knew you could go to Mexico, compete in events of endurance and strength with your ex-gf from another TV show until I saw Real World/Road Rules Challenge. Extreme Couponers is about the same level of realness.

Our Hy-Vee just must suck more than everyone elses. I like to buy the sweet yellow onions for lots of things, which are 77 cents a pound at Fareway and not rotten, and $1.39 a pound at our Hy-Vee with a bunch of brown in the middle. Our Hy-Vee charges $2.50 for an avocado and I can always get fine ones at Fareway for a buck.

I started shopping at Fareway after they built the new Urbandale HyVee. That's when I realized I was paying 15-30% more for groceries and 30-100% more for produce at HyVee. Now, the only shopping I do at HyVee is for a few items Fareway doesn't stock.

I've seen Governor Branstache at IngerDahls a couple times in the past few years. Some of the local food writers and a guy who almost because governor wearing a "******** for Governor" t-shirt at the same Dahls. Every other one is too stuffy and designed all wrong, not enough space between the aisles and old lights that haven't been replaced. It seems like nearly every one needs a renovation.

LOL, IngerDahl's just got renovated several years ago and it still looks dated and crappy.

I would shop at Fareway but for two problems - one, I can't shake the feeling that everything in their stores smells like a butcher shop. Two, they're closed on Sunday which is the day I do my grocery shopping for the week. I will buy meat there if I'm hosting a barbecue or anything like that.

I guess I've never noticed that. I would think that would be a bonus, that you know it's fresh.

I didn't realize that Ames had a Cub Food at one time. I'm surprised it wasn't successful there. They are all over Minnesota and very popular.

It was nice when it opened, and cheap. And then degraded from there.

I don't know if it's systemic, or just an issue at the Dahl's in North Ames, but I'd venture to say that 40-50% of the time I've purchased something there, it rings up more expensive than labelled on the shelf. Very frustrating.

Oh well, I only head there on Sundays when I need a few items. I'm definitely going to miss Fareway when I move away later this year.
