Good thing Fareway has been expanding in the metro.

I miss living near a Fareway so much. I know they have their standardized building layout they use everywhere, but if Dahl's does close down, I hope they would consider taking over that Beaverdale location.

I want to say i remember someone on another board saying something about a possible buyout of dahls by Kroger several months ago. If its closing maybe that was something they were seeking because they were near going under

Less competition isnt a good thing though.
I'd be ok with that. Kroger is awesome.

The Dahls in Ankeny was bought by the city and will eventually be a library. Ames, Ankeny and the one on prospect were going to close after the first of the year. Pepperidge farm is on COD because they are so far behind on their bill. Many long time store managers have seen the writing on the wall and are leaving for other positions with Hy Vee and Fareway. I've delivered product for 7 years to the Waukee store and as someone said earlier Hy Vee has pretty much closed the curtain on that store. Get my info from a former manager who still keeps in contact with people who still work there. It's also been rumored that they have been close many times to not making payroll. I'm afraid the end is near, and talks of a possible buy out from Price Chopper which is based in Kansas City has surfaced recently.

I heard the same rumor about the buyout. Kroger owns the Bakers chain in Omaha.

The one on 50th in WDM would also be a good location for Fareway to take over.

The Metro
Between HyVee which is the local big brand, Fareway which is the local ma and pop, the big box guys like Wally World and Target, the specialties like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, and the cheapo Aldi's, there isn't much room for other chains. Look at how Econofoods tried to compete in Iowa and failed miserably. I'm shocked Dahl's have stuck around as long as they have. It's too bad QT hitched their fuel saver promotion to Dahl's, hopefully they can cut a deal and get in with HyVee.

This doesn't surprise me at all, gave Dahl's a try once and that was enough. Hyvee and Fareway are just far superior and better prices. Wish Cub would have stayed in Ames.

The only thing I will miss will be Dahl Mac and Cheese from the Deli.

When it was fresh and good, it was excellent.

I always find it amazing how you can find out about literally any subject on CF.

I don't know if I'd really consider Dahl's competition at this point, at least in Ankeny. Hopefully they can get bought out by someone who can provide a good selection and reasonable prices.

The Cub Foods in Ames was atrocious. The Dahl's threw some new paint on the walls and maintained the terribleness.

I didn't realize that Ames had a Cub Food at one time. I'm surprised it wasn't successful there. They are all over Minnesota and very popular.

Kroger buyout would be interesting but I can't see how someone would want to try to come into this market place. The Iowa grocery scene has been dominated by Hy-Vee and Fareway for years. And as someone else said with the addition of Wal-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joes the market is pretty well taken care of.

I can't imagine there would be a buyout of Dahl's at this point. I'm guessing some companies that want to test the market may buy a location or two from Dahl's.

I wonder if a company like No Frill's would try to move over this way.

Regardless of who comes in it would take something big for us to switch away from Fareway.

Like IcSyU said, it was a really ****** store. I went grocery shopping there once my Junior yearwhen my parents were moving me into an apartment for the 1st time, because they recognized the name from MN. Whatever makes Cub popular in MN didn't make the trip down to Ames.
