Abdel was somewhat surprising but he’s a semi freak athletically.

BUT THIS ONE...is the surprise one.

I certainly didn't see it coming when he was at ISU. When he went 14-16 from 3pt in his last 2 Lakers summer league games, I started to think he might become a specialist. Following him in Spain the last 2 seasons, I certainly thought he could get a shot. i didn't know he had an "out" in his Valencia contract to go to the NBA. Happy for the guy -- like all our 2nd rounders and un-drafted, he's worked his tail off.

Fansided's Thunderous Intentions cited Deonte Burton as a player with a disappointing Summer League performance this year. Here's a blurb:

Unfortunately, Burton had a lackluster Summer League and didn’t do anything that caught my eye (besides his dunks). Burton averaged 7.5/4.5/2.2 on low efficiency, shooting 36 percent from the field overall and 27.3 percent from behind the arc.

Much like a lot of Thunder players, Burton has incredible athleticism and physical tools but is lacking the consistent and effective jump shot to make him a regular NBA player. This isn’t saying Burton has no shot to consistently crack the Thunders rotation, but I just expected a better showing from a player of his age and professional experience.

There was another article though that talked about how Burton was supposed to be fulfilling the same role he would in the NBA. he wasnt supposed to go out and try to lead the team in scoring. He wasn't supposed to go out and try to earn a contract, it was to gain experience in his existing role.

This article from Thunderous Intentions says that AUG 1 was the date for $1M of Deonte Burton's $1.4M contract would be guaranteed: https://thunderousintentions.com/2019/07/31/okc-thunder-deonte-burton-contract/

I was thinking his guarantee kicked in later but OKC writers seem to be taking it as a given that DB will be on the roster after the Thunder waived Patrick Patterson on AUG 1 to put the team under the luxury tax line.

So the ex-Cyclones-in-the-NBA situation looks like this for the upcoming season, barring unforeseen changes: Burton, Nader -- Thunder; Morris -- Nuggets; Niang -- Jazz; Thomas -- Raptors; Horton-Tucker -- Lakers; Mitrou-Long -- Pacers (2-way); Shayok -- 76ers (2-way). We will likely have 8 ex-Cyclones (Wesley Johnson is dead to me) log NBA minutes next season. That's pretty impressive.

I believe that the following will all be playing BB in one of the better European leagues: Donovan Jackson, Nick W-B, Chris Babb, Tyrus McGee, Melvin Ejim, Dustin Hogue, DeAndre Kane, Hans Brase and Will the Thrill (who will probably play at the highest non-NBA level, the EuroLeague). 9 more, making a pretty good living playing shooty hoops.

Missing anyone? There are probably a couple more in minor European leagues or the G-League (Is Bubu Palo still toiling in the G League? I'm guessing the Darrell Bowie is not playing anywhere after the stabbing but I don't know. Holden was playing in the UAE, I think, which is not much of a league).

Hopefully, Wiggy and Cam Lard will latch on somewhere soon.

It looks like Monte did some NBA PR and clinics in the Philippines (they LOVE hoops there) with Mugsy Bogues:

He tweeted from London yesterday (no idea if this is an NBA thing or not):

That young man from Flint is a globetrotter (but not a Globetrotter) this summer.

Looks like Monte might get some time at the 5 in the Philippines.

    Favorite blurb from that article:

While Morris’ breakout in the 2018-19 campaign surprised many, he simply continued to execute at the elite level he established in college. Across his four years at Iowa State, Morris set the NCAA record for assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.65. Furthermore, Morris has four of the top seven single-season assist-to-turnover ratios that have been recorded by the NCAA (the data goes back to 2008).

    best quote:

“For him to come in as the backup point guard, which was a role people questioned coming into the season, I don't think there are any questions about it now and that's all because of how he played,” Will Barton said in his end-of-the-season availability. “How he ran the team, never turned the ball over, he was steady the whole year. To have a young guy like that in his first season, that's big time.”

I took some kids to Monte's camp today. Monte, Cam and the whole crew were great with the campers.

Monte is making some darn serious coin. How cool is it that he still does this stuff.

It's cool that Cam is coaching there. Good for him. I bet he has a lot of charisma with the kids.

I listened to him coach the kids on his court during a scrimmage and he was great. He would even do his straight arm flex for kids that finished strong at the rim and they had a blast. Monte spent most of his free time talking to as many kids and parents as he could.

This seems to back up what I'd read elsewhere - Deonte Burton's contract is guaranteed for the season. He'll have to show some consistency this year with OKC to assure that he has a future with the club. They're in a rebuild, which means that there is opportunity, but there is no shortage of fringe NBA players looking for a shot.
