And a general rule for me is to get money upfront i.e. skin in the game. Because although contractors get a bad name.....there are just as many customers who have no intention of paying when the job is done. Oh, you can sue them....but the ol "not done to my satisfaction" always wins the day. And for some....it will never be done to their satisfaction.

His stuff is still here. I'm just ready to move on. I'll offer 1/3 paid for work compete, 1/3 for me moving on, and 1/3 back to me. See how amicable it can be

Meaning he keeps what you already paid him? He’d jump on that. You’re in a no-win situation.

This thread would be a lot better with specific examples and/or pictures.

Of the 50% I've paid him I'd like 1/3 of that back.

Are you still in Marshalltown? If so, would you mind PMing me the name of your contractor? Want to make sure we don't hire him for our job.

You expect him to give you money back that you've already paid him? Good luck. He will probably want to keep it "because his commitment to your job kept him from lining up other work."

    1. All I can do is ask for an amicable split.

    2. I could make him spend the next two weeks at my place, not making any more money from other jobs and still not pay him the last half because I'll never accept the job. That's part of the contract.

    3. It would sure help his business to have a customer say he works well with clients and provides good communication as opposed to the alternative, which is what would happen if he didn't agree with my suggestion.

I'm in the general area. I'll PM you depending on the outcome. I'm not comfortable sending out bad references yet until we know what he says.

Hope it works out. So often it doesn't. Maybe this will be the exception. Hope so.

Can you elaborate more on what the short cut was?

The gloryholes were all supposed to be at least 3/4 inch wide, this guy was using a 1/2 inch bit.

I think I'm going to fire him and eat the labor cost I paid. I had two other guys come look and both were cheaper to finish his job than the balance of my contract with him.

Plus I paid him to get materials and there are still some sitting at Menards, so I'm going to Menards to return those so he can't go return them and keep that cash, too.

I think you are making a good decision that will help your stress level by removing you from what sounds like a bad situation.

It sucks about the money, but it happens to the best of us.

Again, can you give more specifics with what the issue was? Framing, plumbing, etc?

Make sure you’ve got the GoPro up and running. If the next guy(s) flops too, “Contractor Conundrum” sounds like a good name for reality TV
