My computer sound and audio quit on my Dell Inspiron 5150 on Thursday, and had worked the night before on Wednesday, so I was completely baffled. I did a virus scan, nothing. I reinstalled the sound driver. Any other ideas? I hope there are some computer savvy people on here with some ideas.

Have you tried different speakers? I think you'd be getting feedback first with bad speakers, but it's worth a try.

If you tried that, and it doesn't produce sound, it's probably time to look at a new sound card, or call it in (if you bought the warranty).

I tried my headphones, and tried my surround sound system and still no go. The sound card, or new laptop, might be the only solutions. Sound about right?

I had a similiar problem with my dell laptop, and did a little research when it happened. My headphones still worked so It's a little different. But apparently the port can get bent or something to that effect, and the computer no longer switches from output through the jack to output through the regular speakers. I never tried putting in a new sound card, I'm a software guy, and haven't messed with much hardware wise especially with laptop
