From a fairly stinging article discussing the choice of majors by athletes at the University of Michigan:

Though they comprise less than 3 percent of the undergraduate population at Michigan, athletes account for 49 percent - 87 of 176 - of those enrolled in general studies.

On the 2004 football team, 58 of 74 recruited scholarship players who identified an academic course of study pursued general studies, according to media guides

I don't think that many D-1 schools that are perennial power schools would want similar articles written about them, as I surmise that the same type of thing is happening there as well.

I don't think that this will really surprise anyone, and I don't see this changing anytime soon.
