Either of those make the selection process less of an arbitrary mess than it is now. People used to joke about a few idiots being on the Harris Poll but even just exclusively using the Harris Poll would be an improvement. The Harris Poll is basically just a much larger version of the CFP committee with less chance of overt favoritism being spread out over many more voters.
If they do have at large births in an 8 team setup like yours, and they use anything but something similar to the old BCS ranking to pick them, they're asking for trouble.
